About this opportunity
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Department of Energy civilian agency, is seeking to procure a 5-axis CNC mill with specific technical and operational requirements. The solicitation emphasizes strict performance specifications for machine capabilities, including precise travel ranges across X, Y, Z, B, and C axes with defined velocity and acceleration parameters. Potential suppliers must meet or exceed the minimum capabilities outlined in the attached specifications document, with particular attention to machine footprint dimensions not exceeding 5924mm length, 3586mm width, and 2000mm height. Evaluation criteria will focus on technical compliance, with suppliers unable to meet the baseline capabilities being automatically disqualified from consideration. The pre-solicitation notice was posted on January 14, 2025, with responses due by January 24, 2025, giving interested manufacturers approximately ten days to review and prepare their submissions.
The procurement does not indicate any specific set-aside designations, meaning the opportunity is open to all qualified manufacturers in the Machine Tool Manufacturing (NAICS 333517) category. While the specific budget range is not disclosed, the comprehensive technical requirements suggest a high-value procurement for a sophisticated precision machining system. The solicitation requires suppliers to provide or demonstrate compatibility with an extensive list of accessories, including a Heidenhain TNC 640 control system, 5-axis simultaneous milling software, a high-frequency spindle, tool management systems, and comprehensive operator and maintenance training. The contract appears to prioritize technical capability and functional equivalence over strict adherence to specific branded components. Interested manufacturers will need to carefully review the detailed specifications and be prepared to demonstrate how their proposed solution meets or exceeds the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's exacting requirements.
