SUMMARY OF WORK
(AMENDMENT - SEPT 2021)
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 PROJECT LOCATION
The Piscataqua River forms a portion of the state boundary between Maine and New Hampshire. Formed by the confluence of the Salmon Falls and Cocheco rivers, the Piscataqua River originates at the boundary of Dover, New Hampshire, and Eliot, Maine, and flows southeasterly for 13 miles to Portsmouth Harbor, comprising a partial border between the two states.
The last 8.8 miles of the Piscataqua River constitute Portsmouth Harbor, which stretches across New Castle, Portsmouth, and Newington, and the Maine communities of Kittery and Eliot.
Portsmouth Harbor, located at the mouth of the Piscataqua River, is about 45 miles northeast of Boston Harbor, Massachusetts, and 37 miles southwest of Portland Harbor, Maine.
1.2 PILOT AND PILOTAGE
a. All vessels, except pleasure or fishing vessels or vessels of 150 gross tons or under, are required to be piloted by a pilot appointed by the Pease Development Authority (PDA) into and out of the Piscataqua River and harbor.
b. PDA Appointed Pilots for Vessels Over 150 Gross Tons
(1) Each vessel of over 10,000 gross tons shall be piloted by a class I pilot as described in PDA 305.01(c).
(2) Each vessel from 150 to 10,000 gross tons shall be piloted by a class I or class II pilot as described in pilot and pilotage rules PDA 305.01(c).
(3) Pilot and pilotage rules can be found under "PDA 300 PILOT AND PILOTAGE RULES" at the following website:
