About this file

This pre-solicitation notice and related technical specifications document describe a planned fixed price construction contract to replace an intake gantry crane at the Barkley Power Plant in Kuttawa, Kentucky. The contractor will be responsible for designing, manufacturing, assembling, testing, and installing a new 165-ton multi-hoist gantry crane. This will include below-the-hook lifting devices and electrical work to install new 480V feeders. The contractor must also remove the existing 110 and 75-ton cranes. Work is subject to power plant outage restrictions with potential revenue impacts. The anticipated NAICS code is 333923 for overhead crane manufacturing. The solicitation release date is expected to be June 2, 2020, with a contract period of 420 calendar days after the notice to proceed. The technical specifications document provides requirements for crane design loads, stresses, and combinations to be considered.

Text version

Intake Gantry Crane Replacement Barkley Power Plant Kuttawa, Kentucky acceleration or deceleration of the gantry crane must be limited to 10 percent of the sum of the travel load and dead load.

g. Collision Horizontal Forces - Collision forces with rail stops must be taken as the forces produced by such collision with the trolley or gantry traveling at the lowest speed point with power on.

Only the dead load will be considered as contributing to the collision forces.

1.4.5.4 Combination of Loads

The structural parts of the crane must be designed for the following load combinations and unit stresses:

a. Category I Load Cases. The unit stresses resulting from the following load combination(s) must not exceed the unit stresses specified in paragraph UNIT STRESSES:

(1) Dead, hoist, vertical impact, horizontal trolley tractive, and 10 psf wind applied in the direction of trolley travel.

(2) Dead, hoist, vertical impact, horizontal gantry tractive, and 10 psf wind applied in direction of gantry travel.

b. Category II Load Cases. The unit stresses resulting from the following load combination(s) must not exceed the unit stresses specified in paragraph UNIT STRESSES increased by 25%:

(1) Dead, hoist, vertical impact, 10 psf wind, and horizontal collision forces.

(2) Dead, 3040 psf wind applied to crane only. (Stability Load Case.)

c. Category III Load Cases. The unit stresses resulting from the following load case(s) must not exceed 90 percent of the yield points of the materials involved save compressive stresses in column members must not exceed the unit stresses specified in paragraph UNIT STRESSES increased by 25%:

(1) Dead load, 10 psf wind to crane only, and the forces produced by the maximum torque of the hoist motor.

(2) Dead, hoist, 3040 psf wind.

1.4.6 Unit Stresses

1.4.6.1 Structural Frame

The structural frame of the gantry crane must include beams, girders, columns, and other members carrying primary loads. Allowable stresses in structural parts (except bolts and welds) for the beams, girders, columns, and other members carrying primary loads inclusive gantry and trolley frames are defined as the lesser of 45% of the yield or 75% of AISC 325 allowable stresses for ASTM A 36/A 36M, ASTM A 992/A 992M or ASTM A 572/A 572M grade 50 steel. Allowable stresses in structural parts not carrying primary loads must be designed to 100% of AISC 325 allowable stresses.
