SCOPE OF WORK

Installation of a Solar Collection Façade Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Bldg. 230

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Installation of a solar collection façade in Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Building 230. This facility has a long, 290 m2 south facing wall, providing the option to install the first solar air collector wall in the Garrison.

The solar air collector system heats outdoor ambient air and provides ventilation to the building’s work space. Fresh air required in the building is heated by the sun when drawn through the entire surface of the solar air collector and distributed throughout the building by ducting, as required.

The facility is currently used as a heated furniture warehouse. In FY 2016 the thermal energy consumption amounted to 353 MWh or 1,204.4 MBTU. The proposed solar collection façade shall be designed to generate approximately 91 MWh/year (309.8 MBTU/year) at a minimum which is approximately 25% of the building’s yearly thermal energy consumption. The fresh air needed for the facility will be preheated by the solar collection façade and thus will increase the comfort level inside the facility during the winter months, since no cold air directly from outside is needed to cover fresh air requirements. This produced thermal energy is completely renewable.

SCOPE OF WORK:

• Prepare work site as required by regulation ( including scaffolding, safety nets, building site equipment) and remove after completion of work

• Remove and dispose of existing south-side exterior wall covering

• Adjust roof and rainwater gutter as required to accommodate new wall structure

• Install sandwich panel wall

• Install substructure for solar air façade

• Install solar air collector, consisting of unglazed perforated dark aluminum panels mounted on top of a substructure, leaving enough air space between the building’s sandwich panel wall and the solar air panels for air flow up the façade.

• Deliver and install connecting pieces for air intakes along south side wall

• Install Ventilation System o Air distribution with de-stratification fans

• Deliver and install air intake fans and ducts

• Deliver and install de-stratification fans

In case it can be assured that an alternate system works at least as efficient (including cost) as the method described above, following alternate solution can be used:

o Air distribution with ducts and displacement ventilation (“Quelllüftung”)

• Deliver and install air intake fans and ducts

• Deliver and install air duct outlet for displacement ventilation
