SPUD AND SPUDWELL SIZING CALCULATIONS REPORT 01/16/2019

TAI 1208 SPUD AND SPUDWELL SIZING CALCULATIONS

DWG. NO. 850-B550-02

1. Purpose This report provides calculations for determining the necessary design attributes for each spud, spudwell, fender (wear pad), and the associated structure, to withstand longitudinal forces corresponding to current speeds of 13 mph and transverse forces corresponding to current speeds of 5 mph as well as wind speeds of 25 mph (both cases). The following two cases were investigated:

Case 1 “Longitudinal Loading”

• Angle of attack of 5°

• Wind – 25 mph

• Current – 13 mph

Case 2 “Transverse Loading”

• Angle of attack of 90°

• Wind – 25 mph

• Current – 5 mph

Additional topics discussed herein are as follows:

• Vessel dimensions and spud characteristics

• Spud loading/force analysis and calculations

• Spud sizing calculations and SM verification

• Provided factor of safety for the spuds

• Spud structural component calculations

2. Introduction The spud loading calculations were performed according to UFC 4-159-03 (Unified Facilities Criteria, Design: Moorings [UFC]). Calculations for wind and current forces applied to the spuds were calculated according to UFC, considering a water depth of 35 ft.

2.1 Vessel Specifications

The main barge characteristics are provided in the Table 1 below.

TAI 1208 SPUD AND SPUDWELL SIZING CALCULATIONS

3. Methodology The cases described in Section 1 were analyzed, and the results were used in sizing the spud and spud structural components. Figure 1 below shows the spud orientation in which the maximum longitudinal force was obtained (starboard spuds deployed) from analyzing all conditions of spuds deployed. A free body diagram has been also provided as part of Appendix 2, detailing the forces considered and their vertical location along the length of the spud.

Figure 1: Starboard spuds deployed

Both Case 1 and Case 2 were independently analyzed in order to size the spud itself. For Case 1, the spud component force results obtained at an angle of attack of 5° were used. For case 2, the spud component force results obtained at an angle of attack of 90° were used. These loads, along with the drag forces corresponding to the specific condition of interest, were used in verifying the size of the spudwell gate structure and retaining pin as well as in sizing the spud cross section itself.

The spud was sized according to a design safety factor of 2. As there is loading in both directions

(transverse and longitudinal in both Case 1 and Case 2), a bixial interaction method was used to validate the Section Modulus (SM) of the spud cross section. Contributions of stresses on both major and minor axes was considered.

4. Results Tabulated results (as a function of the angle of attack) of all loads on the spuds are presented in Appendix

1. Included in the tabulated results are the component and total force for max spud normal stress (Fx,t +

Fy,t). The total force at an angle of attack of = 5° (Case 1) is 100,696 lbf. The component forces for

SPUD AND SPUDWELL SIZING CALCULATIONS REPORT 01/16/2019

TAI 1208 SPUD AND SPUDWELL SIZING CALCULATIONS

transverse and longitudinal directions are 75,760 lbf and 24,936 lbf, respectively. Note that the force values were taken at the expected angle of attack of 5°, however the SM considered (1,085 in3) was taken at 0°.

The bending moment was calculated by taking the product of the net force and the exposed length of the spuds for both directions (longitudinal and transverse) and subtracting the corresponding moment due to the spud drag force.

The moments were then used in evaluating the bending stresses in each direction and applying the interaction method (Equation 3 below) to validate the SM, in accordance with AISC ASD Manual (9th

Edition).

A similar analysis was performed for Case 2, with the corresponding values taken at 90° angle of attack.

The calculated value was 0.36, also satisfying equation 3. A complete analysis is provided in Appendix 2

– Spud Sizing Calculations Rev P2. The recommended cross section is that of a 30” x 30” x 1” square tube made of T1 (A514 Grade B Steel). The following calculations were also performed following the sizing of the spud:

• Shear Stress Analysis of the Spud Cross-Section

• Spud Buckling Analysis

SPUD AND SPUDWELL SIZING CALCULATIONS REPORT 01/16/2019

TAI 1208 SPUD AND SPUDWELL SIZING CALCULATIONS

All calculations listed above are presented in Appendix 2 – Spud Sizing Calculations. In addition to calculations based on first principles for the spud and its components, a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) investigation was also performed. The FEA reports can be found in the Appendices listed below.

5. Conclusion As seen in Appendix 2, all calculations show that the spud and its associated structure is designed sufficiently to withstand the maximum forces associated with the wind and current speeds previously mentioned.
