The Nation’s Premier Laboratory for Land Forces Materials Research - Micro Chip Graphic: Representative of MEMS research

Computational Sciences - Ballistic Modeling Graphic: HPC simulation long range artillery system - looking at angle of attack on the non-linear Kennard vortex interaction. yellow round circle is a cut plain and looking at the piece of picture with vortex lines.

Sciences for Lethality and Protection - Materials Modeling Graphic: The objective is to establish the capability to design materials for use in specific dynamic environments, especially high strain-rate applications. ARL established a major basic research program for Fiscal Year 2012 and beyond to address the requisite grand challenges required for more revolutionary advance in the area of multi-scale Materials in Extreme Dynamic Environments.

Information Sciences - Bees Swarming Graphic: Bio-inspired networking. Foundational, cross-cutting research for a fundamental understanding of interactions, interdependencies, and common underlying science among social/cognitive, information, and communications networks. Prediction and control of the composite behavior of these complex interacting networks will ultimately enhance effectiveness in network-enabled warfare and counterinsurgency.

Assessment and Analysis - Mid-Torso Modeling Graphic: To lighten the load for the dismounts of a brigade combat team headed to mountainous terrain in Operation Enduring Freedom, the director, Rapid Equipping Force (REF) requested ARL quantify the survivability effects of REF’s proposal that the standard ballistic vest be supplemented with the MBAV, a lighter-weight, less-restrictive plate carrier. The REF sought guidance on the differences in the areas of coverage for the soft armors in the context of the threats they are designed to defeat. The REF incorporated these ARL results in their decision briefs to the VCSA and the SecArmy, who subsequently approved fielding the plate carrier to the 4-4 Infantry Brigade Combat Team just before they deployed.

Human Sciences - Brain Modeling Graphic: Conduct research and development leading to the demonstration of fundamental translational principles of the application of neuroscience-based research and theory to complex operational settings.

Sciences for Maneuver - Wing Graphic: Micro autonomous systems - Perform enabling research and transition technology that will enhance Warfighter's tactical situational awareness in urban and complex terrain by enabling the autonomous operation of a collaborative ensemble of multifunctional, mobile microsystems.

Extramural Basic Research - Eye: Optical Negative Index Metamaterials

The Nation’s Premier Laboratory for Land Forces Split Torque Face-Gear Technology Technology Purpose/Goal:

Increase power density of rotorcraft transmission while reducing weight and size using split-torque and face gear concepts Accomplishment:

(1988-1994) Proposes split-torque face-gear concept; develops geometry design tools with academia and industry (1994-2001) Partners with DARPA and OEMs to establish feasibility of face-gear manufacturing processes and split-torque transmission concept (2001-2007) Transitions technology and supports AMRDEC development effort through face-gear testing; Boeing announces plans to use for Block III Apache Improved Drive System; 2007 US Army Acquisition Corps Collaboration Team of the Year Award (2010) Provides experts to inspect transmission and certify it at TRL 7 required prior to entering LRIP (2011) First Block III Apache delivered to the Army Resources that funded the accomplishment (Army & others):

The Nation’s Premier Laboratory for Land Forces The thrust isfor 2030 and beyond.

4 focused campaigns – Soldier, communicate, move, and shoot.

4 cross cutting – EBR, computational sciences, materials, aandA

This is really a transition year for how we describe our program.

Sciences for Lethality and Protection: Images illustrate three distinct threat environments whose phenomena is important to understand to further lethality and protection sciences. The far left illustrates a shock wave propagating across an instrumented headform wearing PPE. The middle picture shows an illustration of a ballistic impact to head protection and the far right picture is a MUVES run showing behind armor debris spall lines to passengers in a light-armored vehicle. In all of these areas, it is important to note that materials research is cross-cutting and integral to the advancement of lethality and protection technology for the Army.

Responding to the National Security Challenges of the 21st Century “We will need new technology over the next 10 years to make a leaner and more capable Army.”
