The Army is the largest GPS user in DoD, making PNT a Priority

An Integrated Architecture approach is needed to implement PNT requirements on Platforms 640,000+ Individual Systems that Require PNT in the Army with >90 Different GPS Receivers

PNT Division

Mounted PNT: Robust integrated multi-sensor system for vehicular applications, supporting all PNT needs on the mounted platform, and maintaining PNT assurance during operations in GPS denied environments. Mounted PNT will be scalable and configurable in order to suit any needs. Mounted PNT will also provide a PNT system that can be used in an autonomous platform.

Dismounted PNT: Low-SWAP multi-sensor PNT system for the soldier, maintaining PNT assurance for the Warfighter. Dismounted PNT will incorporate ranging devices, vision navigation sensors and miniature inertial sensors to allow continuous operations when GPS is unavailable.

Pseudolites: Augmentation of military GPS signals in denied environments through terrestrial and aerial based transmitters enabling satellite-like signal acquisition and tracking. Ultimately providing navigation and timing to military forces on the battlefield in GPS degraded or denied environments.

Anti-Jam Antennas: Enables GPS signal acquisition and tracking in challenged environments.

Decision Support

Human-Computer Interaction

Data Synchronization

Intelligent Agents

Decisions at the Speed of Battle: Capability to make effective decisions at the point of action through simplifying computing infrastructure & reducing cognitive burden

Background: Army Commanders must make timely, effective decisions in an increasingly complex world with more capable adversaries. Vast amounts of available data can increase cognitive burden and reliance on degraded or contested networks, making the decision process harder. Efforts are needed in investigating technologies that integrate and simplify data to improve situational awareness, shared understanding, and team decision-making at the point of action in highly complex and uncertain environments.

POM Strategy: Army S&T efforts will focus on research and development to improve decision making through predictive mission recommendations and alerts, simple and intuitive interfaces, consistent data across all environments, and automation of mission command related tasks through introduction of intelligent agents.

Technical Challenges Decisions at the Speed of Battle

Decision Support

Human-Computer Interaction

Data Synchronization

Intelligent Agents

Decision Support: Due to complex environments and compressed operational timescales, Commanders and Staff cannot always incorporate all available information when making decisions. There is a need to develop tools and adapt processes to facilitate timely and effective tactical decision-making during mission planning and execution.

Human-Computer Interaction: Current human-computer interfaces often require users to expend significant time and effort to exchange information with Mission Command systems. Given increased task complexity demands and increased information exchange between human and machine, there is a need to develop more naturalistic interfaces to reduce cognitive burden, improve shared understanding, and achieve mutual trust.

Data Synchronization: Data exists in many forms and locations across Army systems, leading to incomplete, inaccurate, or stale data. Capabilities are needed to ensure that data is always accessible when, where, and in the format it is needed, across systems, echelons, computing environments, security domains, and DIL networks.

Intelligent Agents: Vast amounts of complex data increase the cognitive burden of filtering and integrating data into actionable information. There is a need to research, extend, and combine artificial intelligence and automation techniques to enhance situational understanding, as well as, planning and synchronizing manned and unmanned assets to support effective teaming and execution of mission orders.

Technical Challenges Expeditionary Command & Maneuver Mobile Command Nodes

Distributed Computing Infrastructure

Agile Command Post Planning & Organization

Expeditionary Command & Maneuver: Capability to rapidly deploy, scale and reconfigure command nodes to seize, retain, and exploit the initiative in a dynamic operational environment while maintaining freedom of maneuver.

Background: The Army is shifting its command post strategy from one that is static and tied to unit formations to an adaptable and agile suite of equipment tailored to the specific requirements of a mission and its operational conditions. Technology is required to increase the simplicity of the constituent command post equipment and the speed that this equipment can be employed.

POM Strategy: Army S&T efforts focused on research and development in providing modular equipment to construct flexible and scalable command posts, seamless information environment and knowledge management technologies which allow the anticipation of information needs and the proactive staging of information for the commander, and applying research to the multi-dimensional resource scheduling problem of task organizing our formations to mission at unprecedented levels of speed.

Technical Challenges Expeditionary Command & Maneuver Mobile Command Nodes

Distributed Computing Infrastructure

Agile Command Post Planning & Organization

Mobile Command Nodes: Providing physical infrastructure technologies that are flexible enough to be packaged into configurable capabilities suitable for multiple missions. Buildings, vehicles, shelters and dismounted equipment must be modular and serve multiple functions for the warfighter. The developed equipment and technical interface standards must serve multiple domains and provide for the disbursement and concealment of command nodes and subassemblies.

Distributed Computing Infrastructure: Providing a seamless computing environment that is available to commanders and staff performing mission command throughout all physical locations. Physical processing centers allocated to command nodes which allow the data and information environment to be available.

Agile Command Post Planning & Organization: Providing a planning and provisioning capability for unit formations and the equipment that makes up the physical and information environments required for mission command. The planning and scheduling of resources required to conduct operations needs to be done in a dynamic and flexible manner. The capability to quickly re-plan and re-configure formations and equipment to suit new changing threats and operational conditions.

Current Lines of Effort

Decision Support Reduce information overload & improve decision making through R&D of AI and Autonomy software to assist Warfighters with knowledge management, data analysis, task automation, automated recommendations and intuitive data presentation

Computing Environments Validate and reduce risk for COE data architecture; simple, intuitive, consistent data and human computer interaction

Command Post Concepts Enable more mobile, scalable, and tailorable command post designs that support all phases of tactical operations & forms of maneuver

Design Principles: Simple, Intuitive, Commander Centric, Expeditionary
