The decision to locate Camp Stewart in southeast Georgia was driven by several factors: mild climate, inexpensive land, sparse settlement, and proximity to railroads, major highways, and port facilities. After the purchase and condemnation processes were completed, Camp Stewart stretched a 40 by 20 mile swath across ve counties—Bryan, Liberty, Evans, Long, and Tattnall.

1.2 WALLPAPER AND WALL TEXT
When Camp Stewart was created in 1940 as an anti-aircraft training center, many of the newly-federalized National Guard units sent here had recently been re-designated from infantry or cavalry specialties to take on the task of learning how to shoot down fast moving aircraft, day or night, in all weather. The camp was named for Brigadier General Daniel T. Stewart, a native of Liberty County.
Eventually the camp comprised nearly 280,000 acres in ve counties—the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River.
Homesteads and farms, some as old as the nation, others dating to the logging and turpentine boom of the early 1900s, were bought by compulsory purchase, although with fair compensation. The government said it needed to acquire an “impact area,” so some of the displaced referred to the project as “The Area.” Today, 60 small but well-maintained cemeteries, still visited by descendants, bear witness to the previous inhabitants.

The 101st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment was a new unit, having been organized from what had been the 108th Cavalry. It had a headquarters battery and four individual batteries, all of which were making the transition from mounted cavalry to anti-aircraft artillery. Battery A was the Georgia Hussars of Savannah, whose lineage reached back to colonial times. Battery B was the Liberty [County] Independent Troop, with lineage back to the Revolution. Battery C was the Governor's Horse Guards of Atlanta. Battery D was formed in Bainbridge, Georgia, just prior to the formation of the 101st and was the "baby" of the unit.
The 214th Coast Artillery Regiment of the Georgia National Guard, constituted in 1939, entered federal service on 25 November 1940 at its armory in Washington, Georgia. It soon moved to Camp Stewart for anti-aircraft training. In September 1941, it embarked from San Francisco to the Pacic Theater. Island hopping by way of New Zealand and New Caledonia took the regiment to Guadalcanal, where it provided anti-aircraft defense. It was inactivated in November 1943, but subordinate elements continued to serve as separate battalions under an Anti-Aircraft Group Headquarters.pillowcase artifact corner curved wall - SW 6356 Copper Mountain - 70” X 96” X 32” (right side), 4” (left side) images a-c 6.5” from right 1.75” vertical space between images bottom 29.5” from oor text - MYRIAD PRO SEMIBOLD line 1 81.75” base line from oor (not decenders) wallpaper top 75.75” from oor image a top 77” from oor right 5.5“ from panel right edge image b top 57.75” from oor right 5.5“ from panel right edge image c top 43” from oor right 5.5“ from panel right edge monitor inset in panel 43.5” from right side of panel 39” bottom to oor

A large number of African American AAA units were trained at Camp Stewart during World War II. The 90th went on to serve in the Pacic while the cadre remained at Camp Stewart to train other African American AAA units before eventually being assigned to active service in the Pacic.

I can remember quite vividly, as I was Chief of the Range Section and ‘A' Battery had the only Electro-Mechanical Computer in the Battalion at that time. I taught ocers and enlisted men operation and maintenance of this machine known to us as an M-7 Director, used with the 90mm gun. After weeks of hard work and long hours of training, the 90th AAA Gun Battalion was ready for action."

By World War II, women had the vote and some demanded the right to do more than they had been allowed to do in earlier wars. The Army rst created an auxiliary organization, the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC). It soon became part of the Army itself — the Women’s Army Corps (WAC). The 150,000 women who served as clerks, phone operators, or mechanics, enabled more men to serve in combat—the equivalent of seven infantry divisions.
At Camp Stewart, the WAC barrack was adjacent to the post Guard House and Military Police station, under continuous guard, with live ammunition.
“The rst two WACs assigned to Camp Stewart, shown here ca. 1943, worked as mechanics in the post motor pool.

Germany, Italy, and Japan were the Axis Powers against which the U.S. fought in World War II. Most Japanese soldiers killed themselves rather than surrender and there were no Japanese prisoners here. Although German and Italy were allies,German and Italian prisoners had separate camps at Camp Stewart.
One complication arose when Italy surrendered in 1943 and changed sides while Germany remained an enemy. The Ital-ians were not repatriated to Italy until the war ended, but in the U.S. they were no longer treated as prisoners and were allowed outside work duty. In and around Camp Stewart they worked on road construction crews.

Camp Stewart’s Cultural Impact wall color SW 7038 Tony Taupe (existing)
At its peak in World War II, Camp Stewart housed 50,000 men. This enormous inux transformed the whole region, especially Hinesville, which remains the economic hub of the region today. As there were no barracks, the soldiers lived in tents. Rents soared. Law enforcement and public services were overwhelmed by the swelling number of resi-dents. There also was cultural conict between rural and urban Georgians, local people and those from other states, and the changing role of women in wartime.
Georgia facilities were wholly segregated by race during World War II, which shocked some African American soldiers from northern states. There were race riots at Camp Stewart and soldiers were killed on more than one occasion. Popular recollections of those days vary from Army ocial reports, which downplayed the events and kept them out of the press as much as possible.

Korea was a Japanese colony from 1910 until Japan surrendered to the Allies in 1945. Because the Allies included both the U.S. and U.S.S.R., each country was given a zone of occupation, the U.S.
below and the U.S.S.R. above the 38th parallel of latitude. The Soviet zone became a communist state informally called North Korea, ruled by Kim Il-sung whose grandson rules it still. The U.S.
zone became South Korea, ruled initially by an authoritarian government but not a totalitarian one as in North Korea.
Later, South Korea became fully democratic. In June 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea. The United States and United |Nations sent troops to drive out the invaders, which they did, after a three-year war that cost 36,516 American lives. Recent scholarship estimates that more than 1.2 million lives were lost on all sides.

40” The M45 Quadmount was the principal weapon (along with the 40-mm. Bofors AA gun) of highly mobile anti-aircraft artillery battalions deployed in the European Theater during World War II. These battalions provided invaluable air defense to much larger units, particularly eld artillery. Multiple-gun mounts were developed for the M2 Browning because the M2's rate of re (450-550 rounds per minute) was too low for anti-aircraft use.
The M45 is operated by two loaders and one gunner. The mount is capable of traversing a full 360 degrees around, with an angle elevation between -10 and +90 degrees. Traverse and elevation are electrically driven.

This is the uniform of Kenneth N. Pierce of Glassboro, New Jersey, who is shown here. He was among many men from southern New Jersey or eastern Pennsylvania who were drafted and sent to Camp Stewart for training. Pierce was assigned to “B” Battery, 101st AAA Battalion, and served his entire two-year term with this unit, accompanying it from Camp Stewart to
Wisconsin and Chicago. After his service, Pierce remained in touch with his fellow veterans and regularly attended reunions in the Northeast as well as Coastal Georgia.

In Army lingo, a camp is a temporary site while a fort is a semi-permanent one. Accordingly, it was a great boost to the region when, in 1956, Camp Stewart was designated as Fort Stewart.
While it did not mean the post could never close, it provided an element of stability previously lacking. The post also transitioned from an anti-aircraft artillery training facility to a tank and artillery re center.
The transformation from camp to fort was reected in the architecture of the fort after 1956. With assurance that the post would endure, temporary buildings erected in World War II —with an expected life of ten years at most— gave way to both larger and more durable buildings.

Cold War Visitor:
President John F. Kennedy
Shortly after the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962 subsided, the Fort Stewart commandant was notied that a V.I.P. would be visiting. It was soon ascertained to be President John F. Kennedy. He arrived at Hunter Field on 26 November and ew to Donovan Parade Field, where he reviewed the entire 1st Armored Division. He proceeded to a conference room specially enlarged from headquarters space for the occasion, where he was briefed on armed forces’ readiness to respond to the Cuban crisis. He toured training areas and visited soldiers in the eld before returning to Donovan Field for the helicopter ight back to Hunter Field and Washington, D.C. The Command Conference Room at Headquarters remains a legacy of that important presidential visit.

The type of war being fought in Vietnam required increased aviation capability through the use of helicopters and light, xed wing aircraft, and more pilots to y them.
In 1966, Fort Stewart joined the Aviation School at Fort Rucker, Alabama, in meeting the demand. Helicopter pilot training and gunnery courses became Fort Stewart's new mission. Instead of its initial mission to train soldiers to shoot down aircraft, it was training soldiers to y them.
When the Air Force closed its base at Hunter Field in Savannah in 1967, the Army assumed control and in conjunction with the ight training being conducted at Fort Stewart, the U.S. Army Flight Training Center came into being. As President Richard Nixon implemented “Vietnamization” of the war, South Vietnamese helicopter pilots were trained there from 1970 to 1972, when the ight training mission at Fort Stewart and Hunter Field were terminated. Both facilities reverted to garrison status.

1st Ranger Battalion
Recognizing the need for a highly trained and mobile reaction force, in 1973 Headquarters, Forces Command, directed activation of the 1st Battalion (Ranger), 75th Infantry. On 1 July 1974 the battalion parachuted into Fort Stewart, where it was stationed until moving to Hunter Army Aireld in September 1978. The unit was rst called upon in 1980 in Operation EAGLE CLAW, the Iranian hostage rescue attempt. Although unsuccessful, Rangers and other special operations forces from the Department of Defense developed tactics, techniques, and equipment from scratch, as no doctrine existed at the time.
In 1983 the battalion deployed to the Caribbean island of Grenada to rescue U.S.citizens and restore democracy. In 1986, the 75th Infantry became the 75th Ranger Regiment. Its 1st Battalion was committed to Operation JUST CAUSE in Panama in 1989. Its successful combat jump and seizure of Torrijos-Tocumen Aireld contributed signicantly to U.S. success. Elements of Company B, and 1st Platoon, Company A, 1st Battalion, deployed to Saudi Arabia in support of Operation DESERT STORM in 1991. Three months after the attacks on New York and the Pentagon on 11 September 2001, elements of Headquarters Company and Company A deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. In 2002, the entire battalion went to Afghanistan. Other deployments there followed. In 2003, 1st Battalion engaged in combat operations in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. It distinguished itself during the successful rescue of the prisoner-of-war Pfc. Jessica Lynch.

Operation RESTORE HOPE aimed at providing food assistance to Somalia. This is the entrance sign from the 24th Infantry Division’s “Victory Base” in Mogadishu, the capital.
During a struggle between local warlords, a U.S. helicopter was downed, as chronicled in Mark Bowden’s Black Hawk Down (later a lm). Fort Stewart’s 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized) deployed its Immediate Ready Company (IRC) on 4 October 1993 in response to the previous day’s events.

The 3d Infantry Division, in World War I called the 3d Division, gained the nickname “Rock of the Marne” for holding its position against furious German assaults along the Marne River in France in 1918. Fort Stewart became the division’s home in 1996. The division’s history is told in an adjacent gallery.
The 3d Division shoulder sleeve insignia is a blue square with three diagonal white stripes. Blue symbolizes loyalty and is the Infantry branch color. The white stripes symbolize the three campaigns that the division fought in World War I. White represents purity of heart and purpose. Later, as manufacturing methods changed, the patch gained an olive green border which changed to rie green in 1956, when the color of the Class A uniform coat changed. Combat uniforms have had subdued division patches of various color schemes to match the uniform and the combat environment.
