About this file

This document contains a question and answer exchange regarding a federal contract opportunity for medium caliber armament barrel manufacturing. The question asks if Picatinny Arsenal has considered roller burnishing instead of honing for meeting its requirements. The answer from Picatinny Arsenal states that while roller burnishing may yield superior surface finish and bore roundness, it is a cold work process that could change the material properties and adversely affect the rifling procedure. As a result, Picatinny Arsenal's original requirements specified in the related federal contract opportunity remain unchanged and focus on drill and hone capabilities. The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation from the Department of the Army Materiel Command Contracting Command Picatinny Arsenal for a commercial item involving medium caliber armament barrel manufacturing capabilities.

Question: Would be if Picatinny has considered Roller Burnishing as opposed to Honing. If you have, and subsequently prefer Honing, then we will quote in accordance with your current request only. If Roller Burnishing is something for consideration, then we would desire some guidance on what to submit. Being that we will only be allowed to submit one bid. Or perhaps further technical discussion is in order. We can always submit a bid with all three options on one bid, but if Roller Burnishing has been eliminated internally at Picatinny, then we will stay with the drill/hone method and bid accordingly.

Answer: At this time our investigations into the skive roller burnish (SRB) process show that though it may yield a superior surface finish and roundness of the bore, the burnishing portion is a cold work process that will change the properties of the bore material enough that it may adversely affect the rifling procedure. Therefore, at this time we do not require the ability to SRB and our original requirements remain unchanged based on our intended uses of this equipment.
