About this file
This document contains questions and answers regarding a solicitation for medium caliber armament barrel manufacturing capability. The solicitation seeks proposals for barrel drilling, rifling, and honing machines capable of producing sample barrel workpieces in bore diameters ranging from 5mm to 50mm for drilling, up to 100mm for rifling, and up to 558mm for honing. The majority of work on the machines will likely involve 20mm, 30mm, and 50mm bores. Offerors are expected to provide all necessary tooling for production of the sample workpieces at no additional cost.

Medium Caliber Armaments System Barrel Manufacturing Equipment
1. Will the Government be responsible for the purchase and supply of the tooling used by the machine supplier (offeror) to drill the hole and rifle the grooves of the two (2) sample barrel workpieces? The specification has no reference to cutting tools for the drill, hone or rifling machine.
The Government requests the offeror/resultant contractor to provide all tooling to make the samples, which would become Government property upon acceptance of the machines. Thus, the expectation is that the tooling costs would be included in offeror’s proposed pricing.
2. The machines specified have a diameter range, as follows:
(drilling machine) UNI-50 = 5mm to 50mm bore diameter (rifling machine) R100 = up to 100mm bore diameter (honing machine) OTW = up to 558mm bore diameter
The UNI-50 is at its maximum rated drilling dimension when producing the 50mm bore in the sample part, and the material is specified up to Rc 50 hardness in a forged condition. Is the Government’s product range such that the smaller end of the (drilling machine) UNI-50 range is desirable rather than quoting a machine operating in the middle or top end of its range? Please confirm what they expect the workpiece size range to be, and where the largest quantities fit in that range.
The majority of the work on these machines will most likely be 20mm, 30mm and 50mm bores.
