About this file
This document is an Illinois Secretary of State Drive Away Vehicle Permit form issued in June 2022. It serves as an official permit template for vehicle dealers and remitters licensed in Illinois to operate unregistered vehicles. The permit is issued by the Illinois Secretary of State and is distributed to licensed vehicle dealers and remitters throughout the state for use in vehicle sales transactions.
The permit is available in two types: an Illinois Resident Permit (Intrastate) with a 7-day expiration and a Non-Resident Permit (Interstate) with a 90-day expiration. The Secretary of State charges $10 per 7-day permit and $27 per 90-day permit to licensed dealers and remitters. Dealers are limited to issuing only three intrastate permits per vehicle per year, while only one interstate permit is allowed per vehicle annually. All permits require proof of ownership and must display either an Illinois address (intrastate) or an out-of-state address (interstate). Trucks and trailers must be operated on empty weight, and vehicles must carry appropriate mandatory liability insurance coverage. Each dealer is assigned numbered permits and is responsible for maintaining records of all permits issued for three years. Permits become void if any information is missing or altered.
