About this file
This document is a product specification sheet for SS-1h Asphalt Emulsion, produced by Unique Paving Materials Corp. located in Cleveland, OH. The specification sheet details the technical characteristics, application methods, and performance standards for an anionic, slow-set asphalt emulsion used as a tack coat in road construction and pavement overlay projects.
The SS-1h product is designed as a bonding agent between existing pavement and new asphalt overlay, with specific application guidelines including temperature restrictions (50°F to 140°F) and surface preparation requirements. The product is available in multiple packaging options: 5-gallon pails (42 lbs), 55-gallon drums (440 lbs), and bulk gallons. The specification includes detailed technical testing data conforming to ASTM methods, with specifications for viscosity, storage stability, cement mixing, sieve analysis, and residue characteristics. Typical test results demonstrate the product meets or exceeds the specified performance standards, with key metrics such as penetration, ductility, and solubility detailed in the technical data table.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
SS-1h is an anionic, slow set, asphalt based emulsion, consisting of Asphalt Cement, Water, and a Proprietary Emulsifying Agent. It is also known generically as a Tack Coat.
APPLICATION:
SS-1h is used as a bonding agent between the existing pavement and new asphalt overlay. After cleaning the old pavement and removing any loose debris, apply SS-1h to the surface of the old pavement and allow to break before placing the overlay. Breaking or curing occurs when water evaporates from the product changing the color from brownish to black. SS-1h is typically applied with a pressurized system that can create an even fan pattern to apply a thin and uniform coating.
LIMITATIONS:
Never apply SS-1h when pavements are wet, raining or expectant rain. Do not apply SS-1h when ground or air temperature is below 50°F. Recommended application temperature is 70°F to 140°F.
STORAGE:
The SS-1h should be stored between 50°F and 140°F.
PACKAGING:
42# 5-Gallon pail 440# 55-Gallon drum Bulk gallons
