For any reason, should the vendor decide to cut a larger size roll to fulfill the requirement of a smaller sized roll (i.e. cutting 4" off of a 40" x 450' roll into a 36" x 450'), all edges MUST be smooth and flat.
The test is conducted by clamping the paper against a flat surface and measuring rate of air flow passing between the two surfaces. The Sheffield Instrument is the most commonly used, a higher number indicating a rougher sheet.
The brightness test measures the reflectance of paper under strict optical conditions and relates it to a white standard (Magnesium Oxide).
Opacity is greatly influenced by basis weight, brightness, type of fiber and filler. In testing, reflectance of paper is measured when backed successfully by a white body and a black body. The ratio of these two measurements determines the opacity reading.
The CIE measure of whiteness is a measurement of the light reflected by the paper across the visible (daylight) spectrum. The CIE have set a standard of D65 illumination. For a perfect reflecting non‐fluorescent white material the CIE whiteness would be 100, however most 'white' paper will have CIE whiteness measures of between 130 and 170 due to the addition of Optical Brightening Agents (OBAs) which are designed to reflect light from the non‐visible range (mainly ultra‐violet) back in the visible spectrum.
