Tape Library Fire Suppression Scope of Work
July 3, 2022
Background
There are six tape libraries within the data centers at Fermilab. Each specific tape library has a dedicated
FM-200 fire suppression system installed to extinguish a fire that may originate within the tape library.
The goals are to protect the tape media, provide early notification to the Fire Department (VESDA), and avert a potential fire within the tape library or subsequent release of building water sprinklers. The tape library is monitored by a VESDA system and smoke detectors at either end of the library. The VESDA will alert the fire department. If more than one smoke detector alarms, Fluorinated Ketone gas will be released into the library to extinguish the fire.
Technical Requirements
The subcontractor shall supply a new Novec 1230 fire suppression system, including VESDA, addressable releasing modules, a suppression gas, and cylinder for a new Spectra Logic tape storage robot. Note: The proposal is to use the existing Fenwal 6000 fire suppression control panel that operates the existing systems for the new tape library. This will eliminate the need for a new control panel and will require necessary conduit/cabling between the existing controller and the new location of the Novec 1230 system. The VESDA shall have sample points in the top of the frames (see diagram below). The releasing panel shall have more than one smoke detectors installed in the robot to be used for cross zoning to release the suppression gas. Supply fire alarm devices to meet industry standards such as pull stations, abort switch, horn/strobes, and modules. Provide labor and material to install all equipment including sampling and discharge piping, electrical conduits, and wiring. Program and test all the equipment and witnessed by Fermilab. Work with Fermilab Fire Techs on how to interface alarm and trouble signals to the existing building fire panel and Dispatch (Firus). Fermilab will provide the electric circuit for the fire suppression system. Subcontractor will have previous experience installing and commissioning Novec 1230 systems for similar applications.
Provide:
• Provide engineering, calculations, and “as built” shop drawings.
• Furnish and install smoke detectors, manual release pull station, system abort station, and system bypass switch. Install in location near new tape library.
• Furnish and install alarm horn/strobes. Install in location near new tape library
• Install new Novec 1230 clean agent storage cylinder. Install wall protection between wall and cylinder
(see other systems).
• Install clean agent discharge piping into unit.
• Furnish and install new Xtralis VESDA Laser Focus Model VLF-250 air sampling detector with power supply.
• Furnish and install Orange CPVC air sampling piping into unit. Piping shall be UL listed for NFPA 13. Spears
FlameGuard or Nibco BlazeMaster are acceptable manufacturers. All holes and cut ends shall be deburred.
• Perform programming and setup of new equipment.
• Perform all testing and certification of the new and affected existing systems.
• Provide customer training on the operation of the new systems.
• Provide panel programming on USB memory stick in native format.
General
The work location is within the Fermilab Feynman Computing Center in the second-floor computer room
(FCC2). This new fire suppression system will be effectively identical in function to the six previously installed
FM-200 fire suppression systems at Feynman Computing Center and Grid Computing Center.
Fermilab’s preferred maintenance service hours are 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM Monday thru Friday. Maintenance work outside these standard service hours must be ap-proved in advance by one of Fermilab’s primary contacts.
There is an existing networking cable tray and cables above the tape library, and it will be necessary to install the fire system piping/control cables around existing fixtures. The physical dimensions of the tape library are approximately 30’ feet long x 44” inches wide x 82” inches high and there are 12 frames (cabinets).
Safety
Subcontractor personnel who perform work onsite shall apply for a Fermilab ID badge and possess approved Real
ID for access to the Fermilab site and the local work site.
All subcontractor personnel that will perform work on the Fermilab site must attend the required safety orientation training before performing any work.
A written Hazard Analysis (HA) shall be provided by subcontractor and approved by Fermilab construction task manager prior to the start of onsite work. The designated service provider must provide their representatives with
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), tools, and equipment as necessary to safely provide services.
The subcontractor must use safety warning equipment to alert building occupants and pedestrians of hazards and conditions in the areas where work is in progress. (safety cones, signs ropes, barricades etc.).

The library has a punch-out in the cover for each frame and a corresponding cut-out in the top of each frame for the purpose of attaching a hose or nozzle from the fixed extinguishing system.
