About this file

This document is a Questions and Answers file for a Department of Energy solicitation (RFQ418338) for a tube furnace. The procurement requires a specialized furnace with specific technical specifications, including a 100mm x 450mm heating zone, programmable controller with up to 5 ramps, touch screen display, and capability to support multiple atmospheric gases (argon, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen). The furnace must accommodate a 100mm diameter tube, have a 250 lbs weight capacity (excluding the tube), and be built to UL compliance standards.

Key technical requirements include a uniform temperature zone of 450mm, 208V single-phase power compatibility, and NRTL listing or completed field evaluation. The end-user has specific operational needs but will provide their own process tubes. The furnace is intended for the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division, with the contractor expected to meet precise technical specifications without requiring additional UL certification processing by the end-user.

Text version

Answers -The controller must be easily programmable (with up to 5 ramps plus cool down) and we would prefer a display with touch screen.

We are requesting a heating zone that is 100mm x 450mm (~4”x~18”). Dimensions of the furnace should accommodate the correct sized tube and heating elements to meet this specification.

1. Please describe the process or application for which the furnace will be used for?

Our applications are business sensitive.

1. Does the furnace need to support a protective atmosphere, such as Nitrogen or Argon? If so, what gas or gases would your customer like this furnace to support?

We use argon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen in our tube furnaces depending on our processes.

1. What 3-phase voltages are available at the facility?

Our preference is 208V 1Ph

1. The furnace will be built UL-compliant; however, the final UL inspection would need to be organized by either the end user or the contractor. Since the furnace would meet UL-norms, it should pass the final UL inspection without fail. If the end user requires the furnace to be UL-certified, please confirm whether the end user will handle the final UL inspection or if the contractor should arrange it.

The system should come to NRTL listed or with a completed field evaluation; any bid that requires us to have it evaluated does not meet my technical expectations.

1. Please clarify the “Work Zone” dimension. Is it 100mm uniform length +/-10C? or is 100mm referring the ~4” diameter tube? The tube diameter is 100mm (~ 4”) tube.

1. What is the uniform length requested for the heated length? The heated length needing the uniform temperature is 450mm (~ 18”).

1. I do not see a process tube requested. What OD process tube(s) will the end user be using? We do not request a tube from the company as we have many of these on hand.

1. Does the 250 lbs in the work zone include the process tube? 250 lbs weight does not include the tube.
