~ 3 ~
The State University of New York (“SUNY”) is the largest comprehensive university system in the United States, educating more than 467,000 students in more than 7,500 degree and certificate programs on 64 campuses with nearly 3 million alumni around the globe. SUNY is committed to reduce administrative costs, maximize efficiencies, and move resources toward academics and student services.
Located in Syracuse, New York, SUNY Upstate Medical University (herein referred to as “UPSTATE,” “Hospital,” and “SUNY”) is one of just 134 academic medical centers in the United States and one of four such institutions within the SUNY System (UPSTATE, SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, SUNY Stony Brook on Long Island, and the University at Buffalo). Including the SUNY institutions, New York State has a total of 13 medical centers. Academic medical centers encompass more than a hospital: They engage in health care, education, and research.
UPSTATE offers upper division undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees through four colleges: the College of Medicine, the College of Health Professions, the College of Nursing, and the College of Graduate Studies.
UPSTATE is one of three hospitals in the SUNY System and serves the 17-county Central New York region, covering one-third of the state’s landmass, which spans from north of Watertown, south to Binghamton and points east and west of Syracuse. Upstate University Hospital has a total of 752 licensed beds at its two hospital campuses: the downtown campus (“University Hospital”), located at 750 East Adams St., Syracuse, New York with 438 licensed beds, and Upstate Community Hospital (“Community Hospital”) located at 4900 Broad Road, Syracuse, New York, with 314 licensed beds. The Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital crowns the east tower on the downtown campus. Collectively, these hospitals are referred to herein as “Hospital”.
UPSTATE represents the region’s only tertiary care center and is designated as a Level 1 Trauma Center for both adults and children. UPSTATE also operates a range of outpatient clinics and services, features the region’s only Children’s Hospital, and holds several other specific New York State Department of Health designations which include: a Certified Stroke Center (also the region’s first Comprehensive Stroke Center), Burn Center, AIDS Care Center, SAFE Center and a Poison Control Center which serves 54 NYS counties.
UPSTATE also features a UNOS certified Kidney Transplant Center, and the Upstate Cancer Center is certified by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
