FISH BRAIL FRAME
PART 1 GENERAL
1.01 MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT
A. Payment: Corresponding lump sum price offered in the Schedule for Furnish and Install Fish Brail Frame.
1. Includes costs of water removal from the work space below the fish brail in accordance with Section 01 35 26 – Water Removal.

1.03 SUBMITTALS
A. Submit the following in accordance with Section 01 33 00 - Submittals.
B. RSN 13 34 23-1, Approval Drawings, Data, Color Charts and Samples: The Contractor shall obtain the COR’s approval prior to placing the final order for fabrication.
1. Fabrication shop drawings.
a. Show fish brail layout and dimensions; sections through fish brail; seal placement; grating placement; structural connections; and type, grade, size, and thickness of materials.
b. Include bolt plan which shows diameter, location, and projection of bolts.
c. Include weldment details is accordance with AWS D1.1.
d. Sign and seal by design engineer.
2. Manufacturer’s product data.
a. Include complete descriptions of and specifications for materials.
b. Warranty information.
c. Include allowable load tables for structural framing members
3. Color charts for color selection, finish samples.
C. RSN 13 34 23-2, Structural Calculations:
1. Submit structural calculations for the fish brail frame.
2. The structural calculations to be stamped and signed by a professional engineer registered in the State of California.
D. RSN 13 34 23-3, Certifications:
1. List design criteria including codes, standards, and loads.
2. Certify structural design complies with specified design requirements.
3. Sign and seal by California licensed professional engineer.
4. Welder certifications.

E. RSN 13 34 23-4, Installation Plans:
1. Installation plan for fish brail frame.
a. If brail is to be installed in sections, include weight of each section to be lowered by crane to the work area at Keswick Dam.
b. Include field weldments and bolted connections.
2. Installation plan for composite grating.
3. Installation plan for seals.
4. Include manufacturer’s instructions for field “touch-up” of coatings.
F. RSN 13 34 23-5, As-built Drawings:
1. Provide final as-built drawings.
2. Bill of Materials:
a. Show number of pieces in structure; description of each piece including mark number, size, length, and weight; and drawing number for shop detail of that piece.
b. Summarize weights into a total weight for structure.
1.04 DESCRIPTION AND REQUIREMENTS
A. Fabricate in accordance with AISC 316, AISC RCSC, and AWS D1.1. In case of conflicts between the manual and design codes, the most stringent requirement governs.
B. Fish brail assembly to permit normal operation without buckling, failure of seals, undue stress on fasteners, or other detrimental effects when subject to temperature range of 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
C. Fish brail shall be a rigid-frame system similar to drawings included in these specifications.
D. Materials: Provide material of shapes, connection details, and structure setting dimensions as shown on Informational Drawing Nos. 214-D-9130, 214-D-9131, 214-214-10004, 214-214-10005, and 214-214-10006.
1. Dimensions of fish brail frame members and connection details in the drawings are approximate; the Contractor shall verify the dimensions and connection details of existing fish brail frame members.
E. Fabricate fish brail system to withstand load requirements specified below:
1. Loads:
a. Dead: As determined by manufacturer
b. Live: Approximately 1150 lbs, (fish load)
0.1 psi (lifting and cross flow drag)

c. Wind: As determined by ASCE 7
d. Snow: As determined by ASCE 7
e. Seismic: As determined by ASCE 7
f. Deflection: As determined by ASCE 7
F. Bolted connections:
1. Stressed Web Members: Connect by not less than two bolts.
2. Secondary Members:
a. Use two bolts at one end, where possible without impairing main member strength.
b. Otherwise, use one-bolt connection located on inner gauge line.
3. Gusset Plates:
a. Use minimum practicable number with due consideration given to joint eccentricity.
b. Connect compression web members to main members with at least one bolt.
c. Stressed Members: Gusset plates at least 1/8-inch thicker than connected web member.
d. Diagonal tension web members: May be connected entirely on a gusset to avoid use of fills.
4. Provide one-piece diagonals and connect diagonals at point of intersection by at least one bolt. Provide ring fills when distance between two members, at intersection, exceeds 1/16-inch per foot of length of one of members.
5. Reinforce stressed members where outstanding leg is blocked out. Do not strip outstanding angle legs without approval.
6. Clip corners of web members to eliminate or reduce eccentricity.
7. Cut ends of outstanding legs of web member angles 2-1/2 inches and greater at 45 degrees where practicable.
8. Use a single-plate fill instead of ring fills where fills are required at two or more adjacent holes.
G. Double-Angle Web Members fastening criteria:
1. Tension Members: Fasten together at 3-foot-maximum intervals.
2. Compression Members:
a. Fasten together at intervals such that the L/r ratio for one angle does not exceed the L/r ratio for the double-angle member.

b. Maximum interval: 2 feet.
3. Fasten members with stitch bolts at a minimum of two locations between panel joints.
4. Connected legs 4 inches or smaller: Fasten members with one stitch bolt and ring fills on inner gauge line.
5. Connected legs larger than 4 inches: Fasten members with two stitch bolts and one filler plate with one bolt on each gauge line.
H. Welded connections:
1. Perform welding and related work in accordance with AWS D1.1.
2. Welds shall be 1/8” throat minimum in accordance with AISC 316-89.
I. Splices:
1. Make splices only where indicated on drawings or where indicated on approved shop drawings.
J. Connection Bolts:
1. Length shown on drawings.
2. Provide with locknuts.
3. Provide with beveled washers for bolts in sloped flanges.
4. ASTM A 325 bolts: Threads may be in shear plane.
5. Same type and grade for a complete structure.
K. Connection Boltholes:
1. Placement, dimensions, and spacing described on Information Drawing No.
214-D-9130.
L. Eyebolts:
1. Details shown on drawings.
1.05 QUALIFICATIONS
A. Qualify welds in accordance with AWS D1.1.
A. Designer: Professional engineer registered in State of California.
B. Welder: Certified welder in accordance with AWS.
1.06 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Transport and handle in a manner which prevents bending or damage.

B. Prevent damage to coatings.
C. Materials bent in handling may be used when material can be straightened without injury to coating. Replace pieces bent beyond repair at cost to the Contractor.
D. Recoat materials on which coating has been damaged unless damage is local and can be field repaired as specified.
E. Recoat materials on which paint coating has been damaged in accordance with Section 09 96 02 - Coatings.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.01 MATERIALS
A. Government inspection of materials at mill will be waived subject to Section 01 60 00 - Product Requirements.
B. Structural steel: ASTM A 36.
C. Steel pipe:
1. ASTM A 53.
2. Standard-weight, steel pipe.
2.02 ACCESSORIES
A. Bolts: ASTM A 307 or A 325, ASME B 18.2.1
B. Nuts: ASTM A 563.
C. Eyebolts: ASTM A 668, Class C, forged steel.
D. Washers:
1. ASTM F 844 for ASTM A 307 bolts.
2. ASTM F 436 for ASTM A 325 bolts.
E. Isolating Sleeves:
1. Full length Mylar sleeve (extending half way into both steel washers) for each bolt.
2. The Mylar shall be 1/32 inch think tube.
3. Dielectric strength of 4000 volts/mil.
4. Water absorption of 0.8% or less.
F. Isolating Washers:

1. Two, 1/8 inch thick, glass clad phenolic isolating washers for each bolt.
2. Compressive strength shall be 33,000 psi.
3. Dielectric strength of 500 volts/mil.
4. Water absorption 1.6% or less.
G. Filler metal and shielding gases or fluxes:
1. AWS D1.1.
2. Use filler metal and shielding gases suitable for base materials, positions, and other conditions.
3. Use filler metal with a minimum tensile strength of 70,000 lb/in2 for steel.
2.03 FABRICATION
A. Where details of design or fabrication are not specified or indicated on drawings, fabricate in accordance with AISC 316.
B. Fabricate straight and free from sharp kinks and bends.
C. Remove rust and dirt.
D. Do not injure metal when straightening is necessary.
E. Shearing and Cutting:
1. Shear and cut accurately.
2. Neatly finish work to be exposed to view.
3. Fillet copes and reentrant cuts before cutting.
F. Holes:
1. Holes not shown on drawings or approved shop drawings are not permitted.
2. Structural steel less than 13/16-inch thick: Holes may be punched to full size except as noted on drawings.
3. Structural steel 13/16-inch or more in thickness: Drill or subpunch and ream.
4. Holes shown on drawings as drilled holes: Drill or subpunch and ream.
5. Holes:
a. Cylindrical.
b. Perpendicular to member.
c. Clean-cut without torn or ragged edges.
d. Remove burrs resulting from reaming or drilling with a tool making a 1/16-inch bevel.

G. Punching:
1. Full size punching:
a. Punch diameter: Nominal diameter of hole.
b. Die diameter: Not more than 1/16 inch larger than diameter of punch.
2. Subpunching:
a. Punch diameter: 1/4 Inch smaller than nominal diameter of hole.
b. Die diameter: Not more than 3/32 inch larger than diameter of punch.
c. Use subpunch for reamed work so that no punched surface will appear in periphery of hole after reaming.
H. Accuracy of Punching, Reaming, and Drilling:
1. Space holes accurately in accordance with approved shop drawings and locate on gaugelines.
2. Do not exceed 1/32 inch variation in hole spacing from spacing indicated on approved shop drawings for bolt holes.
I. Welding:
1. Perform welding and related work in accordance with AWS D1.1.
2. Interpret welding terms in accordance with AWS definitions. Use welding symbols shown on drawings that comply with AWS symbols.
3. Process: Shielded arc-welding.
4. Welds:
a. As shown on drawings.
b. Continuous unless otherwise noted.
c. In such a manner that residual shrinkage stresses will be reduced to a minimum.
d. Full penetration through material except as indicated on drawings.
5. Stress-relieving treatment: Not required.
J. Measuring:
1. Use a steel tape or rule.
2. Make measurements when steel members and steel tape or rule are within 10 degrees F of ambient temperature.
K. Finish:
1. Where finish type is not specified, use the type of finish most suitable for the part to which it applies and average or rough as defined herein.

2. Average Finish:
a. For surfaces in permanent contact where a tight joint is required.
b. Produce smooth surfaces.
c. Slight toolmarks are permitted.
3. Rough Finish:
a. For machine surfaces not requiring average finish.
b. Rough machine sufficient to produce a plane surface true to dimensions.
L. Compression Joints: Face surfaces of compression joints depending on contact bearings so as to have full contact bearing when aligned and welded.
2.04 SHOP ASSEMBLY
A. Shop assemble one structure of each type to ensure correct fit of parts, adequate bolt lengths, and proper field erection.
B. Do not ream or elongate mismatched holes.
1. Reasonable amount of drifting is permitted. "Reasonable amount of drifting" is defined as drifting without causing hole elongation or deformation of members.
2. Repair coating damaged during drifting as specified below.
C. Dismantle shop-assembled parts before shipment.
D. Designate members and bolts used in shop assembly by sizes and lengths indicated on approved erection diagrams.
E. Should any part prevent proper assembly, determine correction required and submit revised detail drawings and data.
2.05 SHOP COATING
A. Cleaning:
1. After shopwork completion, clean materials of rust, loose scale, dirt, oil, grease, slag from welded areas, and other foreign substances.
2. Clean surfaces of metalwork in accordance to Section 09 96 20 - Coatings, Tabulation No. 1.
B. Hardware:
1. Do not galvanize erection bolts and nuts.
2. Coat hardware after assembly in accordance to Section 09 96 20 - Coatings, Tabulation No. 1.

C. Coating Repair:
1. Recoat material with damaged coating in accordance with Section 09 96 20 - Coatings.
2.06 CONTRACTOR SOURCE QUALITY TESTING
A. Inspect component parts and welds to determine conformance to drawings, procedures, overall workmanship, weld contour, weld size, and any other pertinent items.
1. Inspect component parts for dimensional compliance.
2. Matchmark mating parts.
B. Shop welds:
1. Perform inspections and tests in presence of COR and in accordance with AWS D1.1.
2. All welds: Visually inspect entire length in accordance with AWS D1.1.
3. Complete-joint-penetration welds:
a. Test entire length.
b. Ultrasonic or radiographic testing: AWS D1.1.
4. Partial-joint-penetration welds and fillet welds:
a. Test entire length of welds that fail visual inspection.
b. Magnetic particle or dye penetrant:
1) Magnetic particle testing technique and procedure: ASTM E 709.
2) Dye penetrant technique and procedure: ASTM E 165.
5. Standards of acceptance: AWS D1.1.
6. When welds are found to be defective, repair welds in accordance with AWS D1.1 and reexamine welds to ensure adequacy of repairs.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 REMOVAL
A. Remove and store for reuse, the brail canopy and the brail entrance, including the pneumatic system equipment.
B. Remove existing fish brail in accordance with 01 54 00 - Construction Aids, Crane Lift Plan.

3.02 INSTALLATION
A. Fabricate, assemble, and install new fish brail as specified and as shown on the drawings.
1. Install by bolting, and in accordance with approved erection diagrams and bills of material.
2. Use bolt isolation kits for bolted connections that were assembled and coated in the shop.
3. Reaming or elongating of mismatched holes: Not permitted.
4. Holes more than 1/8-inch off in concentric after the connection is temporarily assembled shall be reported to the COR and approval of method of correction shall be obtained.
5. Place bolts with tightened and locked nuts within the shortest practicable time after members have been placed.
6. Where incomplete bolting is determined to be a major factor in structure damage, repair or replace the structure.
7. If shop errors in structure materials are discovered, submit revised shop drawings for approval of proposed field correction or return materials to the manufacturer for correction or replacement.
B. Coating Repair:
1. Repair damage to coating in accordance with Section 09 96 20 - Coatings.
C. Erection:
1. Fish brail may be erected by assembling sections on the ground and hoisting successive sections into place, or by being built up in place with individual members.
2. If erected in sections, perform initial bolting adequate for dead and live loads and erection stresses, but not so tight as to prevent aligning and fitting adjacent sections or members.
3. Correct misalignment or misfit attributable to the method of erection corrected by adjusting erection methods as necessary to eliminate the problems.
4. Perform field welding, including welding processes and welding operators, conforming to the requirements of article titled Quality Assurance. Inspect field wells in accordance with article titled Nondestructive Testing of Welds.
5. Remove coating or other material that would prevent proper welding or produce objectionable fumes while welding from surfaces within 2 inches of any field weld location. After welding, recoat in accordance with section 09 96 20 - Coatings.
D. Install seals on fish brail in accordance with Section 07 91 00 - Preformed Seals.

E. Install grating on fish brail in accordance with Section 06 74 00 - Composite Grating.
F. Cleaning: Clean structures of foreign matter that will tend to permanently adhere, with special attention to corrosive salts or substances.
3.03 CONTRACTOR FIELD QUALITY TESTING
A. Field welds:
1. Perform inspections and tests in presence of OGR and in accordance with AWS D1.1.
2. All welds: Visually inspect entire length in accordance with AWS D1.1.
3. Complete-joint-penetration welds:
a. Test entire length.
b. Ultrasonic or radiographic testing: AWS D1.1.
4. Partial-joint-penetration welds and fillet welds:
a. Test entire length of welds that fail visual inspection.
b. Magnetic particle or dye penetrant:
1) Magnetic particle testing technique and procedure: ASTM E 709.
2) Dye penetrant technique and procedure: ASTM E 165.
5. Standards of acceptance: AWS D1.1.
6. When welds are found to be defective, repair welds in accordance with AWS D1.1 and reexamine welds to ensure adequacy of repairs.
