About this file
This specification document outlines technical requirements for a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) being procured by the Department of Energy to support research in condensed matter physics and quantum information science.
The STM must achieve a base temperature of 1.7K or less, provide a uniaxial magnetic field of at least 5T, and be compatible with Scienta Omicron flag-style sample holders. Key technical specifications include coarse positioning of 4x4x10 mm, low temperature scan range of 1.2x1.2x0.2 microns, qPlus AFM functionality, atomic spatial resolution with z height noise under 1 pm, and tunneling current below 1 pA at base temperature. Additional requirements include liquid helium/nitrogen hold time exceeding 100 hours, Nanonis controller compatibility, optical access for in situ imaging, vibration isolation system for UHV interface, and NRTL certification. The vendor must provide all shipping/transportation costs (DDP Incoterms), one-year warranty covering parts and service, and onsite training at delivery.

Specification Document: Low Temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM)
The Company is seeking to purchase a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) to support fundamental research in condensed matter physics and quantum information science. The microscope must include each the following capabilities and must meet the listed technical specifications:
1. Turnkey microscopy and tunneling spectroscopy of Pb or NbSe2 films demonstrated during the installation by vendor’s service engineer(s) at base temperature.
2. Base temperature of 1.7K or less.
3. Uniaxial magnetic field of at least 5T
4. Compatible with Scienta Omicron flag-style sample holders
5. Coarse positioning of at least 4x4x10 mm and low temperature scan range of at least
1.2x1.2x0.2 microns.
6. qPlus AFM functionality for non-contact AFM.
7. At least 4 additional sample contacts for device transport measurement
8. Atomic spatial resolution with z height noise less than 1 pm at the base temperature
9. Tunneling current less than 1 pA for scanning at the base temperature
10. Liquid helium and liquid nitrogen hold time longer than 100 hours
11. Include or compatible with Nanonis controller
12. Optical access to microscope for in situ imaging with spatial resolution of at least 10 microns.
13. Passive or active vibration isolation system sufficient to allow UHV interface for connection with existing PLD chamber.
14. NRTL certification of all components prior to delivery of instrument or all necessary information and feedback to complete NRTL certification at the Company’s site.
15. All shipping, insurance, and transportation costs (including import duty) – Incoterms
DDP.
16. One year warranty including all parts and service needed to guarantee microscope performance for the first year after delivery.
17. Onsite training at time of delivery to include all necessary training for operation of microscope.
