NSWC 937 – Steam & Diesel Electric Power Systems

Generation, Automation, & Distribution Ship Systems Engineering Station, Philadelphia PA

Mechanical Interface Specification References:

1. Ship Service Turbine Generator Specification No. TBD Appendices:

1. Appendix A: Application No. 1 Outline and Interface Figures

2. Appendix B: Application No. 2 Outline and Interface Figures

The purpose of this document is to define the mechanical interfaces between the generator and the existing ship side configuration in both intended applications. The provided generator shall conform to the interface requirements as described in this document. Two applications with unique conditions to each are to utilize a single generator. This document also details, where allowed and/or necessary, accessories that may be used to meet the constraints of these interfaces while meeting the overall commonality requirement that the main generator assembly be interchangeable between the two intended applications.

If unavoidable to meet the requirements as set forth within this document, the SELLER shall provide to the BUYER in writing, details of additional modifications to the ship side of the interface for BUYER review. The BUYER shall provide response in writing to the SELLER as to the acceptability of proposed ship side changes.

1. Foundation Interface Requirements The provided generator shall interface with the existing Ship Service Turbine Generator (SSTG) sub base utilizing existing bolt holes to the greatest extent possible, as shown in Appendices A &B. The BUYER and SELLER shall verify and agree upon foundation bolting layout and fastners used. The seller is encouraged to provide a common mounting method for both Applications 1 and 2. A suggested way to accomplish would be to replace the foundation liners shown for application one, and replace with an adapter plate which also would serve as the liner. The slanted portion of the generator below the sub base would need to be angled such that it would not interfere with the foundation in either Application.

Should mounting adapters be required in only one application, it is preferred that Application No. 1 require those adapters and Application No. 2 require none. However, it is acceptable for both applications to require adapters, if necessary. Adapters shall be provided by the SELLER.

2. Overall Envelope & Limiting Dimensions The provided generator shall meet or be less than the maximum envelope requirements, as shown in Appendices A & B. The primary point of reference shall be the center of the reduction gear coupling flange.

3. Main Power Terminal Boxes

Cable entry for the main power terminal boxes of Applications No. 1 & 2 shall be located below the generator so as to meet configuration of Application No. 2 as shown in Appendix B.

4. Sense of Rotation

Application No. 1 generator shall rotate clockwise as viewed from the coupling end. Application No. 2 generator shall rotate counterclockwise as viewed from the coupling end.

5. Generator Drive Coupling Flange The generator rotor shaft coupling face shall be identical for Applications No. 1 & 2. Existing reduction gear couplings are different for each application. A spool piece type coupling shall be used to connect each generator to the respective reduction gear coupling such that the length of each spool is identical, allowing interchangeable generator rotors for both appications. Figure 1 illustrates the current Applications No. 1 & 2 rotor coupling connections.

6. Voltage Regulator

The Application No. 2 generator assembly shall accommodate the mounting of a separate enclosure on the subbase to house the voltage regulation equipment as indicated within Appendix B Space allocation. There shall be no interferences elsewhere on the sub base that would prevent opening the enclosure door to at least a 90 degree angle. Mounting pattern shall match that as shown in Appendix B such that the enclosure shall be mounted upright.

7. Access

Overall dimensions and envelopes for Applications No. 1 & 2 are given within Appendices A & B respectively. Generator shall be capable of disassembly for maintenance using the envelopes specified. Primary access shall be through the opposite side of the voltage regulator cabinet.

8. Support Services Interfaces

Cooling water interface shall be in accordance with the requirements set forth in Section 5.3.11 & 5.3.12 of Reference 1. Cooling water connections for Applications No. 1 & 2 shall be so located as to be near to the locations as specified within Appendix B for Application No. 2.

Bearing return oil shall use a gravity drainage system leading back to the SSTG oil sump, providing positive drainage under the operating conditions as listed in ABS NVR Part 0, Chapter 3, Section 4. Lubricating oil shall be MS 2190 TEP of MIL-PRF-17331. Connection preference shall be as specified within Appendix B for Application No. 2.
