7.0 Test and verify the control equipment functions by receiving correct alarm, supervisory and trouble signals (input); operation of evacuation signals and auxiliary functions (outputs); circuit supervision including detection of open circuits and ground faults; and power supply supervision for detection of loss of AC power and disconnection of secondary batteries. Verify rating and supervision of fuses. Illuminate all lamps and LEDs. Test the primary power under maximum load conditions, including all alarm appliances requiring simultaneous operation. Test the secondary power supply separately.
7.0 Develop a testing schedule to ensure that every initiating device is tested. Actuate every initiating device, including detectors and pull stations and verify proper operation and receipt of correct signal at the supervising station within 90 seconds. Upon completion of the test, restore the system to its functional operating condition. Activation of any detector or manual pull station must cause an audible and visual alarm signal at the control panel. Complete Enclosures 2.2.1 and 2.2.2 recording the results.
7.0 Verify that the detector/alarm initiating device is alarming the proper zone on the Master Panel and all Remote Annunciators.
7.0 Arrange the testing schedule so that all zones will be alarmed during testing. Conduct a cross-zone detection test. The last alarm given on a particular zone should be silenced only (not reset), then, to verify that the subsequent alarm is functioning properly, place another zone into alarm, then the system can be reset.
7.0 Test the detectors using the manufacturer’s guidance. Care and caution are to be used to prevent damage to the detectors and pull stations while testing.
7.0 In addition, test all smoke and flame type detectors to ensure that each is within its listed and marked sensitivity range using one of the following methods:
7.0 Calibrated test method
7.0 Manufacturers calibrated sensitivity test instrument
7.0 Listed control unit arranged for the purpose
7.0 Other approved calibrated flame sensitivity test method that is directly proportional to the input signal from a fire.
7.0 Other calibrated smoke sensitivity test method that is approved by the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).
7.0 If detectors are designed to be adjustable, adjust to bring them into the approved range.
NOTE: DO NOT DETERMINE FLAME DETECTOR SENSITIVITY BY USING A LIGHT SOURCE THAT ADMINISTERS AN UNMEASURED QUANTITY OF RADIATION AT AN UNDEFINED DISTANCE FROM THE DETECTOR
7.0 Verify that the detectors are self-restoring.
7.0 Verify that if the alarm signal has not been acknowledged within 2 minutes, an audible fire alarm is automatically sounded throughout the crew accommodations and service spaces, control stations, and manned machinery spaces. Verify that each Bridge, Quarter-Deck Office and the Engine Room Control Station is receiving the proper delay before any alarms are sent.
7.0 Demonstrate the fire detection and alarm system monitors the power supplies necessary for the operation of the system during loss of power and fault conditions. Disconnect the primary (main) power supplies and verify a trouble or fault indication is given. Measure the systems standby and alarm current demand and verify the batteries ability to meet these requirements. Verify communication between sending and receiving units under both primary and secondary power. Reconnect the primary power upon completion.
7.0 Test the UPS for proper operation.
7.0 Prior to conducting any battery test, verify that all system software stored in volatile memory is protected from loss. Test the performance of the battery charger by measuring the voltage across the battery when they are fully charged and connected to the charger. Test the performance of the batteries by disconnecting the charger and conducting a load test (full fire alarm load) on the batteries verifying the voltage does not fall below the manufacturer’s specified levels.
7.0 Verify the local and remote annunciators operate and identify correctly under all conditions.
7.0 Test every notification device (audible and visual alarm) verifying each operates properly.
7.0 Check the supervisory circuits and indicators on the control panel and each annunciator panel by operating the Lamp Test Switch. All visual indicators should be lit, and the trouble horn should sound.
7.0 Test for automatic supervision (monitoring) of any fault in all external wiring such as an open circuit, short circuit, or ground. Any of these conditions should result in a visual fault/trouble signal.
7.0 Verify that every fault (such as an open circuit, short circuit, or ground fault) does not prevent the continued individual identification of the remaining detectors and manual pull stations.
7.0 Test and verify that the system automatically resets to a normal operating condition after alarm and fault situations are cleared.
7.0 Fire detection and alarm systems may accept signals from other safety systems. For example, a signal initiated from actuation of an automatic sprinkler valve or fusible link may be sent to a fire detection and alarm system. Test their proper functioning.
7.0 Test all interconnected auxiliary equipment or systems such as remotely controlled fire doors and dampers, fan shutdowns, or elevator recall for proper activation.
7.0 Accomplish maintenance on the fire and smoke detection system:
7.0 Replace those smoke or flame detectors found outside the approved range of sensitivity.
7.0 For estimating purposes assume zero (0) heat and zero (0) smoke detectors and zero (0) pull stations will require replacement.
7.0 Replace any system batteries when the recharged battery voltage or current falls below the manufacturer’s recommendation.
