FIRST ARTICLE TEST PLAN FOR MK 117 MOTOR CASES
DRAWING 1506AS106
1.0 General
a. The standard quantity of cases to be submitted for inspection under this test plan shall be ten (10).
The cases submitted shall be manufactured using the same processes and procedures that the vendor will be using for production cases.
b. Three (3) of the ten cases shall be destructively tested for tensile bar testing.
c. One (1) of the cases shall be destructively tested for surface contamination,
2.0 Tests To Be Performed By IHDIVNAVSURFWARCEN On The Six Finished Cases
a. All six cases shall be magnetic particle inspected for the presents for crack, laps, seams, or other relevant indications.
b. All six cases shall be radiographically inspected, in the 0 degrees, 90 degree, and top positions. This inspection alone will not be a basis for rejection.
c. All six cases shall go through a full surface finish and dimensional inspection. Hardness, Rockwell C, shall be measured in various locations on the case.
d. After the cases have successfully passed tests 2.0, a, b, and c of this test plan, four of the six shall be loaded with Code A grains and hardware and ballistically tested.
e. After successful ballistic testing the cases may be reexamined for steps 2.0,a, b, and c of this test plan.
Unless a catastrophic failure occurs such as burn through or explosion, the cases shall not be rejected for data gathered after they are ballistically tested.
3.0 Paint/Coatinq
a. Paint and coating shall be measured for thickness, adherence, and salt spray.
4.0 Metallurgical Testing Performed By IHDIVNAVSURFWARCEN On The Three Cases
a. The tensile bars will be examined for hardness and pull tested to failure. The tensile bars will then be examined for microstructure.
5.0 Examination of Required Certification And Data
a. The following certifications shall be reviewed for information content and format:
- Material Certification (chemical composition)
- Heat Treat Certifications
- Heat Treat Charts
- Hardness Data
- Certified Tensile Test Data (this shall be reviewed on first production shipment)
- Surface Contaminate Certifications/data
- Dimensional Certification/data
- Coating Certification/data
- Hydrostatic Test Certification/data
- Magnetic Particle Certification/data
- Painting Certification
6.0 Application of This Test Plan
a. Indian Head Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center (IHDIVNAVSURFWARCEN) reserves the right to omit steps from this test plan. The decision to omit the steps shall be based on how much experience the vendor has in the manufacturing the MK 117 motor cases.
