C SERVICE HYDRAULIC STEERING SYSTEM

1. Inspect helm pump fluid reservoir level.

a. Unscrew the self-venting steering fluid filler plug on helm pump, (Refer to Figure 1).

NOTE: Steering system fluid level should be between 1/8 inch and 1/2 inch below the bottom of the plug hole.

b. Check fluid level in the reservoir.

WARNING

AVOID EYE AND SKIN CONTACT WITH HYDRAULIC

FLUID. KEEP AWAY FROM ALL SOURCES OF IGNITION.

USE IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA. WASH EXPOSED

SKIN AND CONTAMINATED CLOTHING THOROUGHLY

AFTER HANDLING. FAILURE TO COMPLY MAY RESULT IN

PERSONAL INJURY.

(1) Add steering fluid, P/N: HF15, (If required).

(2) Remove excess steering fluid using a dropper, P/N: EW-06223-15, (If required).

2. Check the fluid level.

NOTE: An obvious drop in steering fluid level indicates air in the hy-draulic steering lines.

a. Turn the steering wheel all the way to port.

(1) Check for an obvious drop in fluid level.

(a) Purge steering system, (Refer to MPC H00010.0), (If required).

3. Inspect the vent plug for blockage or damaged threads.

a. Replace vent plug, P/N: HA5431, if any of the above discrepancies are found.

4. Install the vent plug on top of fluid reservoir at helm pump.

a. Tighten self-venting plug hand tight.

CAUTION

HYDRAULIC STEERINGHOSESMUSTBEPROTECTEDFROM

CHAFINGANDANYPOSSIBLECONTACTOR INTERFERENCE

WITH ASSEMBLY SCREWSOR SHARP EDGES OF ANY TYPE.

DO NOT ALLOW HOSES TO HANG FREE IN AN AREAWHERE

THEY COULD BECOME A SAFETY HAZARD. THE MINIMUM

BEND RADIUS IS 3.5 INCHES.

NOTE: The self-venting steering fluid filler plug on the helm pump is designed to relieve fluid pressure if the helm is overfilled. A leak from the cap indicates the helm pump has been overfilled, not a damaged helm pump.

NOTE: This procedure requires two people.

5. Check hydraulic steering system for leaks.
