DUAL POINT DAVIT SYSTEM FOR 418’ WMSL
1. SCOPE
1.1 Purpose - This specification sets forth the minimum requirements for purchase of dual point davit equipment for the US Coast Guard to install on the 418’ Maritime Security Cutter (WMSL). This davit is to replace an existing single point davit on up to eight cutters of this class.
1.2 Classification - The dual point davit for the 418’ WMSL cutter class will be used to launch and recover the Coast Guard’s standard Over the Horizon Cutter Boat (CB-OTH) MK III as well as other boats of similar configuration that may be assigned in the future. The davit shall be equipped with an adjustable integrated cradle arrangement allowing various boats to be carried. The davit shall be rated for a Safe Working Load of at least 11,000 pounds.
1.3 Background
The 418’ WMSL class cutters have a maximum beam beltline. Above this line the structure tapers inward. The davit will be installed on the starboard side a minimum of 7 feet above an open working 01 deck that must remain accessible and active. Supporting structure will be fabricated by the installing activity. The boat and davit shall stow inboard of the profile of the deckhouse (not exceeding 24 feet off the centerline). See Figure 1. The davit must move the boat 16 feet to starboard to launch clear of the maximum beam. Under a 20 degree adverse list to port the boat may briefly contact the hull.
The 418’ WMSL class cutters do not have an optimum position to handle a sea painter for control of the cutter boat. The flair and tumblehome preclude using the hull as an inboard stabilizer during launch and retrieval. The davit system shall include a sea painter boat boom to provide a positive towing position.
The currently assigned boat has a dual lift point spacing of 19 feet 6 inches. This boat is subject to replacement. The davit system must be adaptable to handle boats with other lift spacing when new or different boats are assigned. The boat shall stow bow forward.
See figures attached for general layout guidance.
