2. Traffic Overview:
Traffic profiles are not available for each network application; however, traffic consists of the following types:
Exchange email with attachments (max 10 MB size)
FTPs:
Daily-Scanned receiving documents (image traffic-daily) , POS daily TLOG data to two or three hosts at the end of the business day, orders for items to stock store shelves, store coupon redemption information
Weekly: POS price changes & bad check information
Daily store transmissions from the largest store:
1 file 3.7MB in size
1 file 650KB in size
1 file 175KB
1 file 500KB
**note: at a particular store, files are transmitted in sequence, not all at once. Store transmissions times will vary depending on store closing times.
Telnet sessions: business system access for accounting and inventory
From DOS-based wireless handheld devices – character based transmissions *Note: these devices are scheduled to be replaced by Windows CE-based units.
From PCs with special keyboard emulation
Print sessions: daily for order confirmation & reconciliation
CAO printing – up to 10 reports daily per store, from 1-600K in size, report generation is based on store demand DIBS printing – up to 10 reports daily per store, from 1K to 7M in size, report generation is based on store demand
Web-based access for commercial Internet access: ordering of paper bags and other consumables
Web-based access for business system access
Citrix-based client/server sessions for payroll & personnel system access
Electronic Benefits: debit/credit authorization, food stamp credit, etc…debit/credit size = 120 bytes/packet.
The Largest store had 750 transactions / hour on Dec 23, prior to the holiday(See below). Total network transit time for these transactions must be within the 5-7 second range. Total transaction processing time is typically less than 10 seconds.
Software distribution to the stores – currently with CA Unicenter Software Distribution and Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS). This includes service packs in the hundreds of multiple megabyte range. We hope this can move to the multicast environment.
3. The following data illustrates typical daily store FTPs.
This data is from Ft. Belvoir, one of DeCA’s largest & busiest stores. The files below reflect most of the daily file transfers; they are the largest.
These 2 files are transmitted to the Enterprise Data Warehouse:
3,655,820 bytes ./041121/dc.001.gz (see transfer time below)
629,573 bytes ./050110/plu_extract.dat.001.gz
These 2 files go to a business system:
72,005 bytes ./041114/plu_movement.eod.001.gz
448,997 bytes /050110/pluexpt.001.gz
This file displays the file transfer time of 261.19 seconds. This should be considered the typical minimum transfer time VSAT service must provide:
- ftp> put dc.001.gz test.gz
-200 PORT command successful.
-150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for test.gz.
-226 Transfer complete.
-ftp: 3655820 bytes sent in 261.19Seconds 14.00Kbytes/sec
4. This list is a sample of debit/credit transactions by hour and day.
The noon hour looks like the busiest with 744 for that hour on dec23.
