6.0 NOTES
(This section contains information of a general or explanatory nature which may be helpful, but is not mandatory.)
6.1 Background. Boresight procedures on aircraft are performed to verify and align the critical weapons' systems used by the pilot and aircraft avionics. Boresighting is performed when excessive G-loads or unusually violent maneuvers occur, where there is a hard landing, where there has been aircraft structural damage or repairs performed, where the pilot reports a discrepancy, when timed scheduled boresighting is required, or where the local aircraft maintenance chief has determined there is a need. The present manual optical boresight system requires complex calibration procedures to insure instrument readiness and executing alignment of weapon systems on aircraft. The aircraft mission sortie rate is very high and weapon system alignment and accuracy requirements become more necessary under such conditions. Therefore, there exists the common need for synchronization of the aircraft weapons' systems with clear and precise procedures within aggressive environments using the most expeditious methods possible.
6.2 Acquisition requirements. Acquisition documents must specify the following:
a. Title, number, and date of this purchase description.
b. If preproduction sample inspection is required.
