Memorandum
Subject: CO PFH 81-1(4) TARRYALL CREEK ROAD Date: September 2, 2011
Pavement Recommendation
From: Steve Deppmeier
To: Barbara Burke, Lead Designer Mark Meng, PM/COE
I have reviewed Geotechnical Report 97-17 and Materials & Pavement Evaluation Report 98-18 for the Tarryall Route Project. Those reports recommended for a pavement 20-year design life, a structural section of 4-inches HACP on 5-inches Aggregate Base Course. This memorandum updates the recommendation for the 81-1(4) project.
From the reports, the area of concern was approximately english unit Station 1378+00 to 2001+00. The subgrade’s design R-Value was 27. For ease of construction and since no cost savings will be incurred by additional pavement structural sections, only one typical section is recommended. That recommended pavement structural section is:
3 inches HACP 8 inches Aggregate Base Course
Plans should note the asphalt pavement varies from 0 inches to 2 inches, with an average thickness of 1 inch. Due to the numerous asphalt patches and large potholes backfilled with foreslope material, the contractor can expect highly variable surface thicknesses.
