About this file

This statement of work describes a project to develop a computer vision system for the National Synchrotron Light Source II facility. The system aims to localize material holders, stages, and detectors using a multi-camera setup in order to track equipment positions and detect potential collisions in real time. Specifically, the project scope involves developing algorithms to reconstruct 3D environments, track objects, and trigger warnings when collisions are predicted. The system would be deployed and commissioned at the Tender Energy X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy and Quick x-ray Absorption and Scattering beamlines. The related federal contract opportunity is a pre-solicitation notice from the Department of Energy Office of Science for deep learning and computer vision services to upgrade science and engineering capabilities at the NSLS-II.

STATEMENT OF WORK

Project Title: Deep Learning and Computer Vision for Upgraded Science and Engineering at National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) II

Location: Work would be 100% remote.

Introduction:

It is important to keep synchrotron radiation beamline equipment safe during operations, especially for remote and autonomous operations. The current equipment protection system (EPS) is normally based on hard/soft limits and hard stops to avoid equipment damage due to collisions. But, this is still not enough for complex coordinated motions. In this project, we plan to develop a computer vision-based object 3D localization system to localize material holders, stages, and detectors to avoid collisions between them.

Scope:

- Develop a multi-camera system that consists of cameras mounted with diverse view angles and reconstruct the 3D environment interested working area of each object (material holders and detectors).

- Develop algorithm to track the equipment in the interested working area in real-time and determine the potential collisions. A threshold is set to trigger a precautionary warning to the system.

- Setup the system at The Tender Energy X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (TES) and The Quick x-ray Absorption and Scattering (QAS) beamlines of NSLS-II and get it fully commissioned.
