1 Attachment # 2 - TVRO ANTENNA GROUNDING.docx
Attachment No. 2 - BBG TVRO Antenna Grounding
Antenna, IFL Grounding and Lightening Protection
The antenna and IFL cable need to be grounded at the TVRO antenna and also at a serviceable point outside the building where the head end or control room is housed.
The better method for grounding the coaxial IFL cable/s is to use an F type connector feed through grounding block. One of the grounding blocks needs to be mounted near the base of the TVRO antenna and grounded at the TVRO grounding rod. If the antenna is located on a roof top then lightening protection ground should be used. Use a #12 AWG copper wire on the grounding block to make the ground connection.
If there is a nearby electrical service, the antenna ground should also be connected to it. Make the length of this ground wire as short as possible with no sharp bends and with no coils. Ideally all ground connections should be connected to a signal common ground which is bonded to the earth.
All outdoor use A.C. electrical service should employ a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interruption) protection, also when working on TVRO antennas outside, use a wooden or fiberglass ladder where possible.
The coaxial F type connector should then be water proofed, either by using a water proofed case or a rubber sealant type tape.
The other F type connector feed through grounding block should be located t the outside of the building that will house the satellite receivers. The block should be located low/near to the ground and a #12 AWG copper wire should then be connected to the building’s electrical ground with the shortest length and with no sharp bends or coils. The ground clamp at the building power meter is a convenient place to use. The F Type connections on this block should also be water proofed. If the TVRO antenna is located within a lightening high strike zone, run the TVRO IFL coaxial cable in a galvanized steel conduit from the control room to the TVRO antenna with the conduit connected to the power company ground.
