About this file
This is a structural review letter prepared by Sopko Engineering, PLLC for Roofing Innovations, LLC regarding a roof replacement and solar panel addition project at the Trudy Center in Ellenville, New York, located in Ulster County. The project involves removing existing asphalt shingles and replacing them with a metal panel roof system, while also adding solar panels weighing less than 4 pounds per square foot to several roof sections. The existing roof structure consists of steel joists spaced four feet on center with plywood and furring strips supporting asphalt shingles, featuring a flat central section and sloped side sections at 3.5/12 pitch. The review examined structural drawings dated February 12, 2026, stamped by engineer Salvatore B. Granata, P.E., S.E., along with original structural drawings from October 5, 1994, and a structural analysis dated January 15, 2024, by Anthony R. Yannotti, P.E.
The structural review concludes that the roof has sufficient capacity to support the new metal panel system and solar panels. The analysis utilized a 50 psf ground snow load for Ellenville, appropriate for the site's location in Ulster County and elevation of approximately 400 feet above sea level, reduced to 42 psf for roof snow load with a 20 psf superimposed dead load, totaling 62 psf against calculated roof capacity of 70 psf. The new dead load from the metal panel roof replacement is slightly less than the existing asphalt system. The review notes that the analysis did not account for snow load reduction available for slippery metal surfaces with unobstructed slopes, though this reduction is negated if snow guards are installed on the roof surface.

Re: Ulster County The Trudy Center

Dear Sean:
At your request, I have reviewed the roof replacement and solar panel addition, for the Trudy Center in Ellenville, New York in Ulster County. My review included the drawings stamped by Salvatore B.
Granata P.E. S.E., dated February 12, 2026, structural drawings, dated 10/5/94 stamped by William L.
Squires P.E., and an analysis by Anthony R. Yannotti P.E., dated January 15. 2024.
In general, the existing roof consists of steel joists four-feet on center, with 5/8-inch plywood supported by 3x5 furring strips 32-inches on center, with asphalt shingles. The roof configuration consists of a flat section of roof at the center and a slight slope of 3.5 / 12 on the sides of the flat roof.
The existing asphalt shingles will be removed and replaced with a metal panel roof. The new dead load will be slightly less than the existing dead load. In addition, solar panels weighting less than 4-pounds per square foot will be added to several roof sections.
The analysis conducted by Anthony Yannotti used a ground snow load of 50psf reduced to 42psf for the roof snow load and superimposed dead load of 20psf for a total load on the existing roof framing of 62psf.
He calculated the total roof capacity to be 70psf.
Based on my review of the drawings and analysis:
1. The 50psf ground snow is appropriate for Ellenville, New York.
2. No reduction in the snow load was taken for the metal roof which is considered a slippery surface.
Based on the slope of 3.5 / 12, a slight reduction is permissible for unobstructed slippery surfaces.
When snow guards are placed on the roof surface, the roof is not considered unobstructed, no reduction is permitted.
The ground snow load for Ulster County is 40psf for the eastern half and 50psf for the western half.
Ellenville’s elevation is around 400 feet above sea level. No increase in the ground snow load is required.
No reduction for the ground snow load was taken for the metal panel slippery surface was used. The 50psf ground snow load reduced to 42psf is appropriate for the site. The 20psf superimposed dead load is accurate. Based on my review the roof has the capacity to support the new roof system and solar panels.
No warranty expressed or implied as to the condition of the structure is intended. No observations were conducted. Typical members were analyzed by others.
Please feel free to call if you have any questions.
Sincerely, SOPKO Engineering, PLLC
