About this file

This is a Project Manual specification document for the Basketball and Academic Performance Center at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, prepared by the architectural firm Perkins&Will. The project encompasses construction services for a 30,000 square foot addition and a Level 2 alteration of 14,500 square feet to an existing gymnasium. The document, revised as of April 3, 2026, comprises Volume 3 of 4 and covers Divisions 26–33, which include electrical systems, communications, electronic safety and security, earthwork, exterior improvements, and utilities. The specifications detail extensive requirements for electrical infrastructure, including low-voltage conductors and cables, grounding and bonding systems, conduit installations, selective demolition procedures, and comprehensive testing and quality assurance protocols. The project manual incorporates references to NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code), NECA standards, UL listings, and IEEE requirements, establishing rigorous standards for materials, installation methodologies, and field quality control testing.

The document specifies that all electrical materials, including single conductor building wire, metal-clad cable, rigid metal conduit, flexible metal conduit, and associated fittings and connectors, must comply with current industry standards and be listed by nationally recognized testing laboratories. The specifications mandate copper conductors exclusively (with limited exceptions for aluminum in designated applications), establish minimum conductor sizes for various circuit types, and require comprehensive grounding systems achieving resistance not greater than 5 ohms. Bonding and grounding requirements include connections to building structural frames, metal piping systems, and air ducts, with detailed protocols for both mechanical and exothermic welded connections. The project requires sealed electrical roof penetrations, firestopping systems to maintain fire resistance ratings, and specialized installations for damp, wet, and corrosive locations. All work must comply with site-specific conditions related to soil corrosivity and environmental protection, with final acceptance requiring field quality control testing in accordance with NETA ATS specifications and documented project record drawings for underground installations and conduits larger than 2 inches.
