About this file

This is a Technical Specifications document for a Hydrogen Dryer System dated 7/21/2025, prepared for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Flatirons hydrogen facility. The specification requires a hydrogen dryer system that can reduce water concentration in hydrogen produced by proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis to below 5 parts per million by volume (ppmv), meeting SAE J2719 and ISO 14687 standards.

The system must consist of a minimum of two independent dryer units capable of processing hydrogen flow rates from 3.75 kg/hr to 117.6 kg/hr, with a Maximum Allowable Working Pressure of 653 psig. Key technical requirements include: compatibility with dynamic electrolyzer operation, ability to handle 10%/sec flow rate variations, redundant dewpoint sensors, no sulfur-containing compounds, electrical components meeting NFPA and NEC standards, and operation at an altitude of 6,040 ft. NREL's goal is to fit the entire system inside a standard 20' ISO container, with delivery to their Arvada, Colorado campus. Optional preferences include 480 VAC power, pneumatic valve actuation, and optional commissioning support.

Technical Specifications

"Hydrogen Dryer System"

Dated 7/21/2025

OBJECTIVE

This hydrogen dryer system will reduce the concentration of water in hydrogen, produced by water electrolysis, to below 5 parts per million by volume (ppmv) for research at the new Flatirons hydrogen facility per SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) J2719 and ISO (International Organization for Standardizations)14687. A minimum of two independent dryer units are required that when combined into a system can dry a total flow of hydrogen from a minimum flow rate of 3.75 kg/hr (41.72 Nm3) to a maximum flow rate of 117.6 kg/hr (1308.3 Nm3).

SPECIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED CAPABILITIES

• The hydrogen dryer system shall be designed with the assumption that the incoming fluid is a mixture of pure hydrogen and water (hydrogen produced by proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis).

• The hydrogen dryer system shall be designed with a Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP) greater than or equal to 653 psig (45 barg) o The hydrogen dryer system shall be optimized for operation from 435 psig (30 barg) to 580 psig (40 barg)

• The hydrogen dryer system shall be designed to achieve a water concentration of ≤ 5 ppmv meeting hydrogen purity requirements of SAE J2719 and ISO 14687

• The hydrogen dryer system shall be designed for a process stream of gaseous hydrogen at a dew point of 8°C and flow rates from 3.75 kg/hr (41.72 Nm3) to 117.6 kg/hr (1308.3 Nm3) o A minimum of two hydrogen dryer units shall be delivered that when combined can provide the total required flow rate o Operation of a single dryer unit is allowed to meet the low-end flow rate requirement o Independent process inputs and outputs, and the ability to operate dryer units individually is required

• Each hydrogen dryer unit shall be compatible with dynamic operation of the electrolyzer and shall be capable of drying flow rate variations up to 10%/sec of full capacity of each dryer unit (i.e., a 75 kg/hr dryer unit would be capable of maintaining an output of ≤ 5 ppmv as the flow drops from maximum to minimum flow by -7.5 kg/hr/sec)

• Each of the hydrogen dryer units shall be capable of 100% duty (i.e. alternating between multiple Temperature Swing Adsorption beds, other technologies may be acceptable)

• Each of the hydrogen dryer units shall have redundant dewpoint sensors

• Wetted components of the hydrogen dryer system shall be compatible with hydrogen gas

• No sulfur-containing compounds (e.g., lubricants) shall be used in the wetted sections of the hydrogen dryer system

• All pressure-containing sections of the hydrogen dryer system shall be designed per applicable sections of ASME pressure codes

• All components of the hydrogen dryer system shall be suitable for service in Class I Division 2 Group B locations

• The hydrogen dryer system shall have a metallic lug or similar for electrical grounding per NFPA 70 National Electric Code (NEC)

• All electrical components shall be listed by a Nationally Recognized Testing Lab (NRTL) or each dryer unit shall be listed as a whole, and meet applicable sections NFPA 70 National Electric Code (NEC) and NFPA 79 Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery

• Guarding hardware and/or insulation shall be included to prevent incidental contact with any parts of the hydrogen dryer system that reach hazardous temperatures during normal operation

• The hydrogen dryer system shall not contaminate the hydrogen stream with other gases or particulates > 50 µm

• Each of the hydrogen dryer units shall minimize (<0.1%) the hydrogen loss during normal operation (e.g., due to regeneration of the dryer beds) o For example, Temperature Swing Adsorption (TSA) dryer technology would be acceptable

• The hydrogen drying system may utilize a supply of coolant fluid (50/50 PG/Water) that can be provided at either approximately 2.78°C (37°F) or outdoor ambient temperature

• The dry hydrogen gas shall leave each of the hydrogen dryer units at ≤ 60°C (140°F).

• The manufacturer shall provide an approximation of the space required for the dryer system including footprint and height, as well as required clearances

• The dryer system shall be designed for operation at an altitude of 6,040 ft (1841 m)

• Equipment shall be designed for an indoor location (NREL will provide a climate controlled, weather proof enclosure in which the dryer system shall be deployed)

• A deoxygenation system as part of the dryer is not required

• The quote shall include delivery costs and freight to NREL Flatirons Campus: 19001

W 119th Ave, Arvada, CO 80007

• Dryer system size shall be minimized (NREL’s goal is to fit all the dryer system inside a standard 20’ ISO container)

OPTIONAL CAPABILITIES:

• It is preferred that no more than a maximum of two individual hydrogen dryer units be delivered to meet the drying specifications o Example configurations are shown below

• The hydrogen dryer system is preferred to be powered by nominally 480 VAC 3-phase, 60 Hz power

• Pneumatic valve actuation is preferred

• Optional commissioning support is preferred

• An oxygen analyzer on the hydrogen flow through each dryer system is preferred
