About this file
This document contains the technical specifications for a dry cooler system required to support the operation of a multi-MW hydrogen site at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) Flatirons Campus in Arvada, Colorado. The dry cooler system must be capable of rejecting 6 MW (20.47 MMBtu/hr) of heat under specified ambient conditions and using a 50/50 water/propylene glycol process fluid. The system must be transportable by road, ASME rated for the process fluid, and suitable for outdoor installation at the required altitude and temperature range. The dry coolers shall not consume any water, and the electric drive motors must be powered by 480 VAC, 3-phase, 60 Hz power. The contract opportunity related to these technical specifications is a Request for Quote (RFQ) for "Dry Coolers" to support the existing Aries 10 MW low temperature electrolysis station, issued by the Department of Energy Office of Science.

ATTACHMENT 1 – Technical Specifications
"Dry Coolers" 11/12/2024
OBJECTIVE
The dry cooler will support the operation of the multi-MW(megawatts) hydrogen site at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) Flatirons Campus in Arvada, CO by rejecting excess heat to the environment.
SPECIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED CAPABILITIES
• A dry cooler solution, using any number of individual heat exchangers, shall be provided that meet the specifications below.
• All equipment must be transportable by road.
• The dry cooler system shall be capable of rejecting a total of ≥ 6 MW (20.47
MMBtu/hr) of heat at the following conditions:
o Ambient pressure at an altitude of 6,040 ft o Ambient temperature: 95°F (35°C) o Fluid inlet temperature: ≥131°F (55°C) o Process fluid: 50/50 water/propylene glycol with corrosion inhibitor
(Dynalene PG) o Process-side flow rate: 1,300 gpm (295.26 m3/hr) o Pressure drop across the heat exchanger: ≤15 psi (1.03 bar)
• The dry cooler system shall be American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) rated for process fluid operation at:
o Up to 150 psi (10.34 bar) o 0°F-185°F (-17.8°C-85°C)
• The dry cooler system, including electric drive motors, shall be suitable for outdoor installation in Arvada, CO at 6040 ft altitude, at ambient temperatures from -22°F to 104°F (-30°C to 40°C), and maximum wind speeds of 155 MPH.
• The dry coolers shall not consume any water.
• Guarding hardware shall be included for any exposed moving/rotating parts.
• The electric drive motors shall be powered by nominally 480 VAC, 3-phase, 60 Hz power.
• Includes delivery costs and freight in the quote to NREL’s Flatirons Campus
TECHNICAL OR SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
All electrical components, such as fan motors, shall meet all applicable electrical code requirements and shall be listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory (NRTL).
The pressure-containing portion of the dry cooler shall be designed to applicable sections of the ASME pressure code.
