About this file

This document is a technical facilities appendix prepared by SCETV (South Carolina Educational Television) that establishes standardized cable nomenclature and system numbering conventions for the organization's studio operations and technical infrastructure. The appendix provides comprehensive guidelines for identifying and labeling cables, equipment, racks, and facility systems across SCETV's multiple technical areas, regional stations, and transmitter sites. The system uses a hierarchical designation structure where each facility is assigned a System number (RM#) to facilitate equipment location and cable management across SCETV's Telecommunications Center and affiliated regional locations including sites in Florence, Columbia, Spartanburg, Greenville, Greenwood, Barnwell, Rock Hill, Charleston, Beaufort, Sumter, and Conway, South Carolina. The nomenclature system accommodates various signal types including audio channels, video, synchronization, control signals, intercom/IFB, component video, and digital audio/video/data transmissions.

The document functions as a technical reference standard rather than a procurement document and contains no pricing, contracting terms, or commercial conditions. It includes detailed cable numbering conventions for equipment-to-patch connections, patch-to-patch connections, and equipment-to-equipment connections, with specific designations for signal types (0-9) that correspond to different transmission formats used throughout SCETV's production and broadcast operations. The appendix lists 65 main technical areas and ancillary areas with their corresponding system numbers and room locations, establishing the organizational framework necessary for technicians and contractors to identify, track, and maintain SCETV's complex technical infrastructure and cabling systems.

SCETV Studio Operations Technical Facilities are involved in the production and dissemination of video, audio, graphic and other resources necessary for programming.

Each Facility is assigned a System number (RM#) to assist in locating equipment for cable labeling within a facility or between facilities. The RM# for our purposes are related to the facility’s System number, not to the physical location of the room within the Telecommunications Center. Regional stations and Transmitter sites are also assigned System numbers. A list of signal identification and Facility System numbers are attached.

System # is first number in Cable Designation (i.e. Term Room starts out with 13xx) Racks numbered with RM# and Rack designation (i.e. Rack 1 in Term Room would be TERM RK1301) Standalone equip numbered with RM#, RK#, Numerical Desig., and Port # (designated by >) (i.e. VTR#1 in Rack1=TERM RK1301 VT1301>HD/SD1) Patch PNLs numbered with RM#, RK#, Num. Desig., and Abbrev. RK Elevation (i.e. PPs in Term Room Rack5=1305AB, CD, EF, GH, JK, etc.)

To avoid confusion with numbers, the letters “I”, “O”, “Q”, and “Z” are not used.

Trays with cards numbered with RM#, RK#, Numerical Desig., RK Elev., & Slot# (i.e. ADA9 in Tray 1, Rack 3=ADA13030109 (RM#=13, RK#=3, Tray#=1, Slot#=9) Cables connecting equip. to a patch point take the name of the patch point (i.e. MXR PgmL out to APP 1307AB>A09 is named #1307A09)

Typical cable label= #1307A09 SRC:TERM RK1302 MXR1301>PgmL DST:TERM RK1307 1307AB>A09

Cables connecting patch point to patch point take the name of the destination (i.e. Tie Line from Patch Point 1303H29 to 1307C25=#1307C25)

Typical cable label= #1307C25

SRC:TERM RK1303 1303GH>H29 DST:TERM RK1307 1307CD>C25

Cables connecting equip. to equip. are numbered w/SYS#, RM#., SIG type, and Numeric Desig.

(i.e. CD Player 2 LCh to Mixer input 6A=#1310601 where SYS#=13, SIG#=1 (Lft Ch), Mixer input 6, A/B Ch=A (A in). CD Player RCh to Mixer input 6B=#1320601 where SYS#=13, SIG#=2 (Rt Ch), Mixer input 6, A/B Ch=B (B in).

Typical cable label for left channel= #1310601 SRC:TERM RK1305 CD1301>ChA DST:TERM RK1302 MXR1301>Ch6A

Typical cable label for right channel= #1320601 SRC:TERM RK1305 CD1301>ChB DST:TERM RK1302 MXR1301>Ch6B In this case, left and right channel cables are “paired” and so end in “1” with SIG type being sequential.

Cable signal type designations on non-patch ANLG cables are:

0=Tie Line, Mono Aud or other undesignated types; 1=Ch1 Aud;

2=Ch2 Aud;

3=Ch3 (SAP or TC) Aud;

4=Vid; 5=SYNC/REF;

6=CTL;

7=ICOM/IFB;

8=Cmpnt Vid (Y/G, Pb/B,Pr/R); 9=Dgtl Aud/Vid/DATA.

Where SIG type is 9 (Dgtl/DATA), an additional signal type would be added, and the cable # would consist of SYS# (13), then:

SIG type 1 (9), SIG type 2 (1=AES1, 2=AES2, 3=AES3, 4=HD/SD, 9=DATA, etc), and Num. Desig.—i.e. VTR 1’s HD Video (Port 3) to a monitor may be #13940001.

Typical cable label= #13940001

SRC:TERM RK1304 VT1301>HD/SD3 DST:TERM RK1304 LCDMON1301>SDI-1

(SYS#=13; SIG type 1=9(Dgtl); SIG type 2=4 (VID); Numerical designation=0001—additional cabling of the same SIG type would have sequential numerical designations)

As stated previously, any cabling attaching to a Patch Panel port, regardless of SIG type, will take the name of the specific patch panel port.
