About this file
This document is the New Jersey Curriculum for Nurse Aide Personnel in Long-Term Care Facilities, developed by the New Jersey State Department of Health, specifically the Certification Program within the Health Facilities Evaluation & Licensing unit. The curriculum was created in collaboration with a task force comprised of representatives from the New Jersey State Departments of Health and Education, the New Jersey State Board of Nursing, providers of long-term care facilities, vocational schools, comprehensive high schools, and community colleges in the Spring of 1994.
The curriculum is a comprehensive 90-hour training program designed to prepare nurse aides for work in long-term care facilities, consisting of 50 hours of classroom instruction and 40 hours of clinical experience. It covers core competencies including basic care, psycho-social needs, physical needs, and spiritual/recreational needs of residents. The program aims to ensure nurse aides can provide high-quality care, with a focus on human dignity, respect, and compassionate service. The curriculum includes detailed modules, learning objectives, teaching strategies, and a skills competency checklist to evaluate student performance. It is aligned with federal regulations, specifically the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987, and is designed to prepare students to perform basic nurse aide skills under the supervision of licensed nursing staff.
