About this file
The document is a Scope of Work for Alpha Spectroscopy Laboratory Services issued by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS). This procurement document outlines a scientific investigation related to uranium and thorium contamination analysis involving laboratory testing services.
The project involves collecting and analyzing approximately 110 soil samples from 50 locations, plus 5 background locations. The laboratory services required include sample receipt and chain of custody documentation, alpha spectroscopy analysis to determine concentrations of specific radionuclides in the Uranium-238 and Thorium-232 decay chains (specifically U-238, U-234, Th-230, Th-232, and Th-228), providing analytical reports and quality control documentation, and disposing of residual sample materials. The scope indicates comprehensive scientific testing services for environmental contamination assessment, with precise specifications for radionuclide analysis.

Alpha Spectroscopy Laboratory Services – Scope of Work
Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS) is requesting laboratory services to conduct alpha spectroscopy analysis on soil samples collected as part of a uranium and thorium contamination investigation. Two separate samples will be collected from approximately 50 locations involved in the investigation and approximately 5 background locations.
One sample from each location will be submitted to the laboratory for alpha spectroscopy analysis of radionuclides in the Uranium-238 decay chain; specifically, U-238, U-234, and Th-230. The second sample from each location will be submitted for alpha spectroscopy analysis of radionuclides in the Thorium-232 decay chain; specifically, Th-232 and Th-228.
The total number of samples expected to be analyzed for this project is approximately 110.
Laboratory services required:
· Sample receipt/chain of custody documentation provided to IEMA-OHS
· Sample analysis – alpha spectroscopy analysis to determine the concentration of radionuclides discussed above.
· Analytical report and/or certificate of analysis provided to IEMA-OHS
· Quality Control documentation provided to IEMA-OHS
· Disposal of residual sample materials
