About this file
This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) file related to an Alpha Spectroscopy Analysis project, identified as the "Madison Project". The document appears to be an exchange between a client and a laboratory, discussing technical specifications for radionuclide analysis. While specific agencies or companies are not explicitly named, the document indicates a scientific environmental investigation involving sample collection and specialized isotopic testing.
The project involves collecting two distinct samples from multiple locations for alpha spectroscopy analysis, focusing on two specific decay chains: Uranium-238 (analyzing U-238, U-234, and Th-230) and Thorium-232 (analyzing Th-232 and Th-228). The laboratory's standard detection limit of 1.0 pCi/g has been deemed acceptable for the project. Sample collection is anticipated to occur before November 1, 2025, with the primary objective of conducting comprehensive radiological analysis before ground freezing. The document provides technical details about the analytical approach, sample handling, and project timeline, demonstrating a structured scientific methodology for environmental sampling and radionuclide assessment.

B-48575 Questions and Answers Question: Are there any detection limit requirements? Laboratory standard target detection limit is 1.0 pCi/g for all Alpha Spec isotopes.
Answer: 1.0 pCi/g is an acceptable detection limit for this project.
Question: The typical Isotopic Thorium analysis by Alpha Spec includes results for Th-228, Th-230, and Th-232 in a single analysis. Is there a particular reason why separate samples are being collected for Thorium isotopes?
Answer: Thanks for the additional information, but due to the nature of the project and the information that we are looking to obtain, we are requesting that the analysis be conducted as outlined in the scope of work.
• One sample from each location will be submitted to the laboratory for alpha spectroscopy analysis of radionuclides in the Uranium-238 decay chain; specifically, U-238, U-234, and Th-230. The second sample from each location will be submitted for alpha spectroscopy analysis of radionuclides in the Thorium-232 decay chain; specifically, Th-232 and Th-228.
Question: When are the samples expected to be collected?
Answer: While the exact timeline for collection is project dependent, to ensure that samples are collected prior to the ground freezing, we anticipate that the samples will be collected prior to November 1, 2025.
Question: Can a site/project name be provided for reference?
Answer: For reference, the site/project name will be the “Madison Project.”
