DESIGN CRITERIA:

Design Loading: Year-round pedestrian use only.

An estimated span of about 65 feet will be required, however, final length shall be determined by the Contractor and approved by the CO.

A minimum pedestrian live load of 85 pounds per square foot (psf) shall be used.

Deck planks shall be designed to a 250 pound point load.

Snow loads shall be 210 psf; determined from Structural Engineers Association of Colorado 1971 Snow Data Equations.

Lateral wind loads shall be 35 psf for girders, and 75 psf for trusses Uplift wind loads shall be 20 psf applied at quarter points.

Design shall also meet the requirements of AASHTO H5 loading.

Splices, if used, shall be designed per AASHTO reference, above.

Deflection Criteria:

Pedestrian live-load deflection should not be greater than L/360.

For trail bridges in which snow loads control the design, the deflection shall not exceed L/240.

Refer to the AASHTO LRFD “Guide Specifications for Design of Pedestrian Bridges” for vibration criteria, which may be more significant than deflection for user comfort.

Trail Width:

Deck and trail clear width shall be 6 feet between railings or curbs.

Bridge Grade:

Max grade shall not exceed 4%. Beveled plates shall be used with steel girders when the grade is greater than 1%.

Bridge Rail System:

AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications shall be referenced for rail loads, with a minimum of two separate horizontal rail elements per railing.

Substructure Design: The following may be assumed:

a.The allowable soil bearing = 4000 PSF,

b. Lateral at-rest pressure = 60 PCF,

c. Lateral active pressure = 45 PCF,

d. Coefficient of sliding for concrete on soil = 0.5, and

e. The unit weight of soil = 120 PCF.
