DESCRIPTION/SPECIFICATIONS/WORK STATEMENT

C.1 General Conditions

Equipment will at times be working within or around live streambeds and floodplains. Some work will require operation in or around flowing or ponded water up to 5 feet in depth.

Equipment will transport large cobble of varying sizes. Excavators and Dozers will excavate channel, trenches, contour banks and stream channels and place large cobble in the stream channel and within the stream banks. A Loaders and/or backhoes will be used to move and sort rock materials, load trucks and stockpile materials. Laborers will be used to help in the placement of large cobble, seeding and mulching of the project area, placement of erosion control devices. Dump truck will be used for hauling excess cut material to nearby disposal area.

C.2 Instream General Description of Work Units

C.2.1 Sediment, Erosion Control, Spill Prevention and Dewatering

Upon arrival oil boom will be placed immediately downstream of the bridge site. Oil spill kits will be staged around the job site and in the equipment. Before any excavation work commences all silt fences will be placed. All refueling activities will be conducted in machine storage and refueling area identified adjacent to the project area. The Forest Service will draw down the impoundment however additional dewatering may be necessary at the site to remove turbid water from within the work area or bypass around the site in inclement weather. Work will be by Pay

Item and accomplished with equipment and personnel designated by the Contractor.

C.2.2 Construction Surveying

The Government will stake construction limits, channel centerline, cut and fill elevations, catch points, and set reference stakes for the project area. The Government will adjust grades and final structure location as required based on field conditions as construction progresses. The contractor will not be required to perform any survey work for this project.

C.2.3 Channel Construction

The channel construction will consist of decommissioning the two concrete culverts and water control structure, excavating the existing channel to its new required dimensions, stockpiling both 30” or larger and 18”-24”rock in separate piles for placement in the nearby existing channel

(see project design drawings), and disposal of approximately 220 CY of excess material to nearby disposal area located on the west side of the impoundment.

Stockpiled rock will be placed AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS and in accordance with the contract specifications. Equipment used to accomplish these tasks will vary from excavators, dozers, dump trucks, loaders and labors. All tasks and work required for this phase will be delinated by the CO or their designee in the field.

C.2.4 Rock Delivery, Rock Sorting and Stockpiling

The 3300 to 4300 ton of 30” or better and the 900 ton of 18-24” rounded rock will be delivered and placed in separate staging areas in and around the project area. Variation in amount of 30” rock delivered depends on the amount of sinking and void fill that occurs during construction.

Final amount will be determined on-site by the construction supervisor. The delivery of the rock will be concurrent with the channel reconstruction. If option 5 is selected an additional 1000 tons of pit run rock will be delievered to the project site. Placement of this material will be by equipment rental with bulldozer, excavator, loaders and dump trucks. This will be by Pay Item and accomplished with equipment and personnel designated by the Contractor.

C.2.5 Berm Completion and Cleanup

After all channel work is completed the partially constructed berms will be completed using the stockpiled excavated materials. Materials will be shaped and stockpiles contoured to blend in with the surrounding topography. All work areas will be reworked with equipment and smoothed out to an acceptable surface. This work will be completed by equipment rental. All erosion, oil spill precautions, sediment control, and dewatering facilities will be removed.

C.3 Safety and Public Notification

Warning signs will be placed at the proper locations to warn public of heavy equipment traffic.

All signs shall meet the minimum requirements as established by the Manual of Uniform Traffic

Control devices (MUTCD), 2003 edition.

C.4 Damage to Structures

The Contractor shall be held liable for any damage caused by his/her personnel and equipment to any existing bridges, ditches, or signs. Repair of structures damaged by the Contractor’s operations, shall be the sole responsibility of the Contractor and at no additional cost to the

Government.
