D. Solder Cooper joints and fittings in accordance with recognized industry practice. Cut tube ends squarely.
E. Provide air vents at high points and where piping turns down in direction of flow.
F. Close openings in pipes with appropriate caps, plugs, or covers during storage and progress of work to preclude introduction of contaminants.
G. Provide valves and unions adjacent to tanks, batteries of plumbing fixtures and equipment, for disconnect purposes. Install valves with stems vertical wherever possible and in no case with stems below horizontal.
H. Provide gate valve and check valve on cold water supply to domestic water make- up connections.
TILLER RANGER STATION REPAIRS 15400- 3/6
I. Ream ends of pipe to full diameter.
J. Reduce pipe sizes using reducing tees or reducing fittings. Bushings not permitted except on tanks and similar equipment.
K. Provide escutcheons on pipes passing through walls, floors, and ceilings in finished areas and where piping is in counters, closets, or cabinets, and subject to view when doors are open.
Cover pipe sleeve and secure plate in position.
L. PEX Pipe Supports
1. Locate hangers, supports, and accessories to support pipelines, valves, and additional concentrated loads.
2. Always strap pipe down before bending. Straps and hangers hold pipe in position and prevent strain on fittings when the pipe is bent.
3. Straps can be as far as 6 feet apart if the pipe is continuously supported.
4. PEX should be supported or strapped every 32” when hung from floor joists or running across rafters. When supporting tube bundles, use a strap to support the entire bundle.
5. Vertical runs need support at every floor level.
6. Horizontal runs should be supported every 32 inches.
7. Since PEX tubing expands and contracts roughly one inch for every 100 feet of pipe
(can vary by brand) for every 10 degrees of temperature change, you must allow for expansion and contraction in long runs with a 12-inch horizontal offset.
8. Always cut the pipe longer than necessary to allow some slack for any contraction in the pipe. 1/8” per foot of length is usually enough. Strapping support should be firm but loose enough to allow the pipe to move back and forth as it expands and contracts.
9. Independently support piping at equipment so that no weight is supported by equipment.
10. Do not spring or bend pipe to fit conditions or to make up joints. Support piping in manner to prevent binding, undue swing, and transmission of vibration to structure.
11. Install minimum of one hanger or brace within two (2) feet from each change of direction in piping.
M. Piping Insulation
1. Insulate Cooper piping with glass fiber covering, 1” thick for cold water piping and 1” thick for smaller hot water piping; 1-1/2” for 1-1/4” and larger hot water piping.
2. Provide continuous insulation through hangers and supports with unbroken vapor seal on cold services. Seal to hanger inserts and to wall, ceiling or floor inserts.
3. Do not insulate underground piping.
3.3 FIXTURE INSTALLATION
A. Install fixtures in accord with manufacturer’s instructions.
B. All exposed fixture connections and piping shall be plated with polished chrome.
C. All fixtures in contact with finished walls shall be caulked with waterproof, white, non-hardening sealant which will not crack, shrink or change color.
D. Clean and flush traps. Thoroughly clean fixture surfaces with a non-abrasive cleanser.
3.4 EXCAVATING
TILLER RANGER STATION REPAIRS 15400- 4/6
A. Do not excavate for mechanical work until the work is ready to proceed without delay, to minimize the total time lapse from excavation to completion of backfill.
B. Excavate for piping 6” to 8” clearance on both side of pipe, except where otherwise shown on the drawings or required for proper installation of pipe joints, fittings, valves and other work.
C. Depth for Exterior Piping – excavate for exterior water bearing piping (water, sewer, drainage) so that the top of the piping will not be less than 3 feet vertical distance below finished grade.
D. Depth for Piping Under Concrete Slabs:
1. For piping 5” or less, do not excavate beyond depth indicate in drawings; piping to be supported on undisturbed soil, and hand excavate the bottom cut to accurate elevations.
E. Store excavated material (temporarily) near excavation, in a manner, which will not interfere with or damage the excavation work. Do not store under trees. Retain excavated material that complies with the requirements for backfill material. Dispose of excavated material that is in excess of quantity either needed for backfilling or does not comply with requirements for backfill material.
F. Maintain dry excavation for mechanical work, be removing water. Protect excavations from inflow of surface water.
G. Where subbase material is required below piping and mechanical work, compact by tamping to form a firm base for the work. Provide finely graded subbase material for pipe, valves and tanks.
H. Do not backfill until installed mechanical work has been tested and accepted, wherever testing is required. Backfill with finely graded subbase material to 6 inch above pipe and tanks. Do not backfill with frozen material.
3.5 TESTING
A. Water Piping B. Test all piping to a pressure equal to 100 psig. Hold test pressure for minimum of 4 hours without leakage. Arrange for the COR to witness the tests. Provide written report.
C. Leave piping exposed (unconcealed) for observation during testing. Expose any work that was covered or concealed before testing for the duration of the testing period.
D. Repair leaks & defects discovered during testing with new material and re-test until satisfactory results are obtained.
E. Testing of portions of the entire system is permitted provided clear documentation is included with the test reports showing the extent of the piping under test.

A. Excavation.
1. Operations shall be in compliance with the requirements and restrictions of
OSHA, and the Oregon or Washington Occupational Safety and Health Code.
TILLER RANGER STATION REPAIRS 02318 - 2/5
2. Potholing shall not exceed 3.5 feet deep and 5 feet wide. Notify COR if potholing occurs out of this scope.
B. Overexcavation.
1. Restore to grade any overexcavation by backfilling with select material.
C. Salvage of Topsoil.
1. Suitable topsoil not containing well-bound pieces of sod may be conserved for use as topsoil backfill material.
D. Wet Excavation.
1. If water is encountered during trench excavation, provide adequate pumping equipment and piping to keep trench free from water and dispose of the water without damage to adjacent property. Separate payment will not be made for pumping of water from trenches or for excavation of material rendered unsuitable as a result of water encountered.
E. Unsuitable Material.
1. Where unsuitable material is encountered in the trench bottom, as determined by the COR, excavate the trench below grade to the depth specified by the
COR.
F. Backsloping, Sheeting and Shoring.
1. Backsloping of trench walls will be allowed only upon prior written approval of the COR.
2. Remove all shoring and sheeting when construction is completed. Withdraw to prevent trench wall caving while backfilling.
G. Excavated Material.
1. Pile excavated material at the side of the trench where it will give the best protection for the work. Leave adequate space between the toe of the spoil pile and edge of trench to prevent material from falling into the trench.
H. Backfill.
1. Do not place backfill until installation of meter has been approved by the COR.
2. Before compacting backfill other than sand, prepare material to a water content that will permit proper compaction by either aerating the material if it is too wet, or spraying the material with water if it is too dry. Thoroughly mix each lift before compaction to assure uniform distribution of water content. Do not compact material above pipe until there are 6 inches of cover over the pipe or cable.

TILLER RANGER STATION REPAIRS 02318 - 3/5
c. Bedding Material.
1) Place in lifts 4 inches or less in thickness and compact with a minimum of 3 passes over the entire lift surface. Compact around pipe barrel and bells by hand tamping.
d. The number of tamper passes required may be reduced upon acceptance by the COR, if approved test method results demonstrate that the backfill compaction meets or exceeds the density of the natural ground adjacent to the trench. Any such testing shall be performed at the Contractor's expense.
4. Water compaction shall not be used.
3.02 REPAIR/RESTORATION
