Harbors”, the revised edition. At a minimum, conform to the live loading requirements stated on the Construction Plans and listed herein.

Each individual dock module/section shall consist of decking surface and the float structure, which are to be constructed as a single, integrated component. Each module shall provide for the support of the module dead load plus a specified live load of 62 pounds per square foot (+/- 1%). This shall be accomplished without the use of foam for either structural integrity or floatation. The dock sections shall be manufactured by a rotational molding process. The individual dock sections shall contain a number of integral interior, air-filled pylons. These pylons shall provide for floatation in the event of a breach of an exterior wall of the dock section; as well as the structural support for the deck portion of the float. Each interior air-filled pylon shall support the dead load plus a live load of 55 pounds. The volume of each air-filled pylon shall be no less than 1540 cubic inches.

Each module/section will incorporate a hydrophobic vent to be located at least 5 inches above mean water level. The purpose of this vent is to allow dock sections to “breath” such that they do not change shape due to air pressure fluctuations during atmospheric temperature changes. Hydrophobic vents shall not allow water to pass through.

646.03 Design Requirements for the Constructed Dock System.

Live loading and freeboard requirements for the assembled dock system (comprised of connected individual dock modules) are stated on the Construction Plans. Conform to the stated Plan requirements. The supplied dock system including stiffarm and cable supports shall be designed by a Professional Engineer. Submit stamped and sealed design drawings & calculations to the C.O. for review prior to ordering or fabrication.

The dock system shall be capable of withstanding the impact force caused by a 35 foot boat striking the end of a finger at a speed of 2 miles per hour (mph) and at an angle of 10 degrees off center.

646.04 Dock Material. Individual dock modules/sections shall be rotationally molded from virgin polymer, thermoplastic, linear, low-density polyethylene (LLDPE). LLDPE for dock module construction shall be molded with beige, light brown, or tan colorant and an ultraviolet (UV) light inhibitor additive. The completed modules shall be constructed to resist 8000 hours (or more) of UV exposure with less than a 7% decrease (cumulative) in the mechanical strength properties of the LLDPE.

All material used in the dock structure shall provide for resistance to rust, corrosion, and the effects of spilled any fuel or gasoline. All material designed and selected for marine environment and the conditions thereof.

646.05 Dock Properties and Strength Requirements.

(a) The dock section shall have a cold brittleness temperatures equal to (or less than)

-130 degrees Fahrenheit, per ASTM D-746:

(b) The properties of the exterior wall thickness of the dock sections shall be as follows:

(1) The mean exterior material thickness shall be no less than .310 inches.

(2) The corners shall be no less than .650 inches.

(3) The walls of the dock sections shall resist a shear of no less that 1900 pounds per square inch, per ASTM D-732, as well as having the capability of resisting a minimum impact of no less than 220 foot-pounds, per ASTM D5420.

(4) The tensile strength at failure shall be no less that 2630 pounds per square inch, per ASTM D638.

(c) The decking surface shall be composed of a textured surface with an overlying grid pattern for added adhesion during dry conditions. Drainage of the decking surface shall be accomplished through the use of troughs, which shall extend over the width of the dock and shall be positioned at intervals of no less that

4.5 inches and no greater than 6.5 inches over the entire length of the module.

Additional properties of the decking surface shall be as follows:

(1) The deck shall have an approximate coefficient of friction equal to 0.35 during dry conditions and 0.61 during wet conditions (as measured per

ASTM D2394).

(2) The mean deck thickness shall be no less than 0.315 inches.

(3) The deck thickness shall be no less than 0.290 inches at any particular point.

(4) The deck shall resist a punching shear which is no less that 1900 pounds per square inch, per ASTM D732.

(5) The deck shall resist a minimum impact of no less than 120 foot-pounds near the center, or at the point where the deck is thinnest, per ASTM D-

3029.

(6) The deck shall resist a minimum impact of no less that 150 foot-pounds within 16 inches of the outside of the module edge, per ASTM D-3029.

646.06 Floating Dock Structure/System. The dock structure, as a whole, shall consist of the individual modules/sections, which are to be coupled together in the specific configurations shown on the Construction Plans. The dock structure shall act as one unit when assembled, so that wave and/or wind action shall produce a minimum amount of motion. The securing stiffarms shall allow the structure to rise and fall freely with any water level changes and allow the structure to span waves from crest to crest, while providing a stable walking surface.

646.07 Connection of Dock Sections/Components. Each dock section shall have molded-in female-type pockets spaced symmetrically along the top and bottom edges, around the entire perimeter of the dock section. These pockets shall be spaced at 19.5 inch intervals, center line to center line, from each other. The molded-in female-type pockets shall accept a male-type tapered coupler which shall be secured into the female pocket with the use of a 0.5 inch x 13 inch coupler bolt and nut.

The purpose of such connections is to provide for simple assembly and disassembly, as well as providing for the securing of one section to another. The connection will also provide for the ability to attach accessories to the dock sections. Each connection point shall allow for some slippage in the event that an extreme stress is applied. This slippage will allow for disconnection without causing damage either to the male-type couplers or the female-type pockets.

Male-type couplers shall be constructed of no less than 90% post/pre-consumer recycled tire rubber. Each male-type coupler shall withstand a pullout force of no less than 2500 pounds before failure of coupler occurs. Each of the molded in female connection pocket shall provide for a pullout strength of no less than 3500 pounds, before damage is caused to the dock section.

The tops of adjacent connected dock modules shall have an elevation difference of no more than 0.125 inches. In addition, the deck surface of each individual dock module may not slope at a rate of more than 0.45% over the length and width each individual dock section.

Dock accessories (such as tie-up cleats) shall be connected to the dock system through the use of molded in coupler pockets and/or molded-in “T” nuts around the perimeter of the dock sections. Nuts embedded within the dock modules shall be stainless steel with the ability withstand a pullout force of no less that 2000 pounds before dock module failure occurs. Embedded nuts shall be installed in pairs at a distance of 2 to 3 inches between nuts. Nut pairs shall be molded into the dock sections equidistant between coupler pockets along the sides of each dock module.
