About this file

This document is a detailed technical specification for a vacuum chamber to be installed in an existing accelerator beamline at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The chamber is designed with a stainless steel frame, electropolished, and features removable/customizable aluminum plate covers with O-ring seals and handles. Key specifications include dimensions of approximately 13.75 x 24 x 30 inches with 1-inch wall thickness, a vacuum level of ~1e-6 torr, and a separate breadboard mounting system.

The chamber's upstream and downstream sides include various CF flanges (4.5in, 3.375in, 6in, and 8in), with a 6in CF flange featuring a window. The design includes lifting points on removable face covers, mounting holes, and feet for table attachment. SLAC emphasizes that this is an initial concept and is open to alternative fabrication methods. The chamber must be cleaned to ultra-high vacuum (UHV) standards, following a specific cleaning procedure involving degreasing, chemical etching, passivation, and final packaging in dry nitrogen gas.

Vacuum Chamber Details

Kelly Swanson

Beamline location

● Purpose: chamber that will contain various diagnostics and plasma targets

● Connected to existing vacuum beam pipe with

CF flange upstream and downstream

● Circled flanges on the body of the chamber should be recessed to provide as much room around the outside of the chamber as possible

Vacuum chamber to be installed in existing accelerator beamline

• Stainless steel chamber frame, electropolished

• Removable/customizable Al plate covers with

O-ring seals + removable handles

• Dimensions: ~13.75 x 24 x 30 inches with 1in wall thickness

• Vacuum level: ~1e-6 torr

• Separate breadboard on floor - 1in separation, 1/4in-20, 1in Al plate, removable

• Handles/lifting points added to all removable face covers

Detailed engineering is requested as part of the quote.

• This design is an initial concept only. We are open to discussing better, or more cost efficient, ways of fabricating the chamber.

• CAD file can be provided if desired

• Chamber to be supported by threaded rods on the four corners of each chamber

• Threaded rods will pass through holes in the table with washer+nuts to provide alignment capability

• Completed chambers should be cleaned to UHV standards and double bagged in dry nitrogen gas for delivery

• Typical SLAC procedure for cleaning

(please let use know if your typical cleaning procedure differs significantly from this):
