SCOPE OF WORK

2021 Tree Trimming at Zzyzx, CA

Mojave National Preserve

PART 1 – GENERAL INFORMATION

The intent of this project is for the contractor to trim mature athel trees (Tamarix aphylla) and remove accumulated dead vegetative material from Zzyzx Road and Day Use area in the Mojave National Preserve. The area is near the entrance to the Desert Studies Center at an NPS day use area with a bathroom, parking lot, shade structure and interpretive panels. The day use area provides visitors with views of the Soda Dry Lake and the widely photographed Desert Studies Center. This will improve the visitor’s ability to view the Soda Dry Lake, restore the viewshed of the historic landscape, and increase the amount of accessible shade under the athel trees. The green waste will be loaded into dumpsters and hauled to a green waste facility.

1.1 DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

A. Up to 263 trees are to be trimmed so that they increase the amount of accessible shade under the trees and improve the overall viewshed. Trimming should involve removing a mix dead and live branches around the base and main trunk. Lower lateral branches not providing any accessible shade should be removed to encourage vertical growth. Make cuts flush with trunk or branch.

Trees are not to be flat topped. See Figure 2 for examples of how trees should be trimmed. Most, if not all, vegetation can be removed from ground level with chainsaw or pole saw.

B. Project has been divided into 9 Priority Areas. Table 1 contains a list of the number of trees in each Priority Area.

C. Priority #3 has a few large live lateral branches leaning in the road that must be removed. See

IMG-05.

D. Removed vegetation will be placed into dumpsters furnished by the contractor. Dumpsters will be legally disposed of by the contractor in a location outside of MNP.

E. All work must be completed outside of Migratory Bird Nesting Season (Feb 1st – Aug 15th)

1.2 LOCATION:

A. This project is located at the Desert Studies Center approximately 63 miles east of Barstow, CA, (or 6 miles west of Baker, CA) off interstate I-15, on Zzyzx Road within Mojave National Preserve. Facilities in Baker include restaurants, gas stations, motels, convenience stores, etc.

Nearest medical facilities are located in Barstow and Las Vegas. The closest public landfill that accepts green waste is located in Barstow. See map of project site and priority locations.
