Material Specifications
A. Barbed Wire: A strand of two 12‑1/2‑gauge galvanized wires twisted together with 2‑point barbs of 14‑gauge wire spaced 4-inches apart. Wire and barbs shall be zinc‑coated steel, with a zinc coating of at least 0.3 oz/ft2 of coated surface area. The minimum breaking strength of each wire shall be 950 lb‑force. The barbed wire shall conform to ASTM A 121.
B.
Barbless Wire: A strand of two 12‑1/2‑gauge galvanized wires twisted together. Wire shall be zinc‑coated steel wire of at least 0.3 oz/ft2 of coated surface area. The minimum breaking strength of each wire shall be 950 lb‑force. The barbless wire shall conform to ASTM A 121.
C.
Wood Stays: Straight, sound single-stem members. Shall be 42” long, 2” (milled) in diameter made from Ponderosa pine, or Lodgepole Pine. Peeled and CCA treated.
D.
Steel Fence Posts: ASTM A 702; painted green with white or silver tops "T" bar type, with a welded or riveted anchor plate. Furnish with clip‑type wire fasteners (punched tabs for fastening wires are not acceptable). Steel posts shall be manufactured from wrought, rail, or new billet steel, and shall have a minimum weight of 1.33 lb/ft. The anchor plates shall weigh a minimum of 0.67 pounds +5 percent, be a minimum of 18 square inches in area, and be 18-inches from the bottom of the post. The posts shall be 5.5’ in length.

Wood Posts and Braces:

Acceptable Wood Posts: Sound single-stem members. A slight bend in one plane is acceptable. Posts may be full stem members, sawed members of square cross section, or split members (western red cedar only). Nominal diameter for treated posts shall be 6-inches. The following species will be acceptable: Ponderosa pine, Lodgepole pine, fir, and tamarack. All treated posts shall be free of bark with ends cut square.

Basis for Rejection: Posts are not acceptable when sweep causes a straight line joining the center of the top to the center of the butt to fall outside the body of the post, or at point 2-inches or more from the center of the post. Posts that are charred, twisted, rotted, or excessively bent are not acceptable. Seasoning checks, single or opposite each other with a sum total equal to or more than 1/2 the thickness of the post are not acceptable.
3. Wood Treatment Practices: General: The following treatments may be used. Treatment method shall be in accordance with AWPA C 1.
1. Chromate Copper Arsenic Method: chromate copper arsenate, waterborne preservative (conforming to Type B in AWPA 5) shall be applied. Minimum net retention of solid preservative shall be 0.4 pounds per cubic foot (gauge only) using the full-cell pressure treatment process.
2. Assay Report: The Supplier shall furnish an assay report, for all treated wood products, from an independent testing laboratory to the Contracting Officer. A minimum of five inch boring shall be taken from each bundle of 50 posts as samples for the assay report.
