Galice Road Improvements

# General Technical Question Answer Date

1 x The guardrail run at MP 5.29 appears to be incorrect. It shows removing 636 LF and installing 1225 LF with a buried terminal, Tangent Terminal, and a transition. How is this possible? And in order to get 1225 LF you would be installing guardrail in front of an existing rock wall.

Run 005 removes the existing 636’ of guardrail and replaces that. The run is then extended in front of the short rock wall until meeting the BLM lookout area where a tangent terminal is placed near the southeast end of the lookout so that pedestrian access can be maintained from the lookout in between the new guardrail and existing short rock wall. The lateral offset to the guardrail face in the short rock wall section should be 2’. The east end of the run is a buried in backslope terminal near the small pullout. This buried in backslope terminal would then use standard drawing 617‐39 where appropriate at the west end of the terminal to transition the G4 height to MGS for the remainder of the run.An Amendment will be issued addressing plan quantities.

Check General or Technical

2 Why at MP 5.29 to MP 6.23 are you switching the guardrail to Natina Stained instead of corten? Natina is a very expensive process.

FHWA does not recommend Corten weathering steel unless the maintaining agency has an inspection process in place to monitor deterioration over time. In order to satisfy the desired aesthetic look in this area in conjunction with the BLM lookout, a weathering agent such as Natina was chosen as the best long‐term option.

3 The actual mileposts on this road are different then your plans. It appears your intent is to install guardrail in front of rock cuts and various areas.

Is that your intent?

The contract mileposts are based on the line shown on sheet A.3.

4 No utilities are shown or indicated in the plans.

What is their involvement in the project? Are they a conflict? Will they be moved?

Utilities were not identified. Please refer to requirements is Section 107.

5 x The guardrail transition at MP 5.57 is at a rock wall, and it is on a radius. These transitions are intended to be installed on a tangent. Will there be any radius numbers available for this area?

6 x Regarding Pay Items A0070, A0210, A0220, A0230 & A0240: The contract provisions (622.01 Rental Equipment) state that “ This work consists of furnishing and operating equipment for the construction work as ordered by the CO and listed below. Work under this section does not include equipment time used to perform work provided for under any other pay item shown in the bid schedule. The work anticipated under this section includes: shoulder reconditioning.” Shoulder reconditioning is pay item A0070. The contract provisions (617.06 Terminal Sections) state “perform and necessary grading required to install terminals as required on the standard drawings under sections 622 and 623” Was it intended for the terminal grading to be paid for under section

622.01 and not the shoulder reconditioning since there is an existing pay item (A0070) for the shoulder reconditioning already? If in fact section 622 & 623 are intended for the terminal grading how would and additional aggregate that could be required to build the terminal pads be paid for?

An amendment will be issued to address your questions. Required aggregate base is not measured for payment.

7 X Stationing where the shoulder reconditioning is to happen

Shoulder reconditioning has not been defined by stationing, but will be required as described in Special Contract Requirements. The contractor is encouraged to visit the site prior to bidding.

8 X Spec states that if the shoulder is soft, we are to subexcavate and repair. It is unknown how deep, how many square feet, and what we are to use to repair. A typical detail, and a quantity is needed.

303.04 requires surface course aggregate as backfill compacted according to 301.05 .

There is no specific detail.

9 X A government furnished disposal site, for disposal of the excavated spoils, debris, etc. that is supposed to result from this work. According to the specials, any disposal site we come up with, must go through what amounts to months of permitting, therefore precluding us providing a disposal site

There is no government furnished disposal site. Dispose according to 203.05(a). Please see the requirements of 203.05(a) and 105.02(c) Contractor‐located sources, for requirements including the use of commercial sources.

10/19/2018

10 X A typical detail showing how wide and how deep that rock is desired on the shoulder reconditioning. This will also allow us to calculate spoils offhaul to the above waste site.

The Typical sections in the Plans indicate shoulder reconditioning as required (C.3).

The contractor is encouraged to visit the site.

10/19/2018

11 X A bid item for the aforementioned rock, by the ton.

There is no bid item for rock and payment for such work is indirectly included under other pay items

10/19/2018

12 X If shoulder reconditioning and earthwork is desired at the guardrail terminal ends, we need a detail of what that should look like, and a quantity per each, so that we can estimate the export and import, as above.

Terminal grading is required per the applicable standard drawings in the Plans.

Sections 622 and 623 are to be used for equipment and labor needed to meet terminal grading requirements.
