CONTRACTOR Q&A’s (Round 2)

Upgrade Existing Fire Alarm System

Q&A No 1: Thank you for providing answers to the RFI questions for the VA OKC Fire Alarm project. I would like to follow up on Question #7 concerning the commissioning agent. If the General Contractor is responsible for hiring the 3rd party Commissioning Agent but isn’t given any specifications, pricing for this item will be impossible. We would ask you to reconsider and provide specification/scope for the commissioning so proper pricing can be included in the bid item.

Answer No.1: Please see the attached specs for commissioning as requested. (i.e., Attachments 4 & 5).

Q&A No 2:The RFP docs state that this project can take place during normal business hours. This installation will take place in various types of hospital areas including, but not limited to, corridors, offices, labs, exam rooms and conference rooms. Will these areas be available for us to work in during normal business hours? In our experience access has been limited based upon the user needs which result in weekend of night work.

Answer No.2: Area’s the contractor is wanting to work that may affect day in and day out activities must be coordinated with COR. The OKC VAMC will require a 3 week look ahead to ensure the upcoming area’s will be cleared for the contractor to work in during normal working hours.

Q&A No 3: Is it to be assumed that the existing device's back boxes have the capability to support new devices? i.e., correct mudring/support, correct wiring, etc.

Answer No.3: No, that is not to be assumed. Existing backboxes may be reused if they are compliant with new devices. If not, backbox shall be altered or replaced to accommodate new device. Refer to Specification Section SECTION 28 05 28.33 CONDUITS AND BACKBOXES FOR ELECTRONIC SAFETY AND SECURITY. The design assumes existing speaker wiring is sufficient for one-for-one replacement.

Q&A No 4: Is all existing cabling installed in conduit? If not, would this be addressed on a case-by-case basis?

Answer No.4: Existing areas outside of this scope of work were not evaluated. All new wiring is to be installed in conduit as noted in General Note #4 on Sheet FA000. Existing fire alarm wire that is not in conduit will be evaluated during the installation process.

Q&A No 5: For clarification, is the intent to only replace the devices and equipment shown on the drawings?

Answer No.5: As noted in the PROJECT INFORMATION/SCOPE OF WORK section on Sheet FA000, there are numerous areas that have been remodeled and are not properly represented on the existing building floorplans. Unit Pricing was requested in SECTION 01 00 00 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS to allow for scope changes based on field discoveries not correctly shown on the drawings.
