RFI Response

2019 Tompkins Architects Printed 2019-03-28

Date: March 28, 2019

Project Name: Repair Brick Facade

Project Address: VA Lyons Campus, New Jersey

Client Project #: 561A4-12-150

Tompkins Project #: 2017-06

Please see responses below to requests for information received from your office. We have arranged the responses in the same format that we received your requests for your convenience. Please feel free to call with any questions.

RFI’s

1. Drawing AE204 appears to have about 30’ horizontal missing from the elevations when compared to plan view. Is this true? If so, please provide the missing elevation so we can get proper window counts and see all the work required under the contract.

a. The proper number of windows are shown on the elevations provided.

2. On Drawing AE204, you have six note K (“No Work at Parapet and Exterior Elevation”) in areas where other notes show notes G and H (cleaning Capstone and cleaning Brick Façade). Please identify the required work in areas with this conflict.

a. The six areas in question are referring to Note K where it exists on a window that receives no work.

The notes G and H in those areas are referring to masonry capstone and brick repair above the windows with note K.

3. At the site walk through, we saw numerous caulked joints, either vertical in the brick or around and within stone/precast concrete members of the exterior. No work is shown for these joints. Is it correct that there is no at these caulked joints?

a. Caulk joints at stone and precast members is to be replaced only as indicated by note A, and as denoted on Sheet G002. No work is to be done to existing vertical brick caulk joints.

4. 3/AE151: You have a note 3 pointing to the center of one of the glass-lightes in the skylight. Note 3 is a counterflashing note so what is your intention for this note 3 and arrow?

a. Ignore this note, it was inadvertently copied from drawing 4/AE151 and does not apply to drawing

3/AE151.

5. On drawing G002, note H tells us to clean brick, to repair/replace cracked or damaged brick, and to tuck point areas with mortar failure. The other drawings clearly identify the areas for cleaning brick but do not indicate the areas for replacing brick or for pointing. In order for the contractors to be able to competitively bid on the

2019 Tompkins Architects Printed 2019-03-28 same work, please provide quantities for the amount of brick replacement and the quantity of pointing to be included in the bid for the note H areas.

a. Contractors should include unit costs for replacement of brick and tuckpointing with allowances as follows:

i. Brick Replacement:

1. Anticipate the replacement of 2000 bricks.

2. Include in bid a unit price per brick, which will be a fixed price used to establish a credit for brick not needed and to establish a modification for any additional bricks needing replacement.

ii. Tuckpointing:

1. Include in bid an allowance of 1000 sqft. of wall surface.

2. Include in bid a unit price per sqft. of tuckpointing, which will be a fixed price used to establish a credit for work not need and to establish a modification for any additional work that is needed.

6. The drawings identify caulk in certain areas to be asbestos contaminated. Is our asbestos work limited to the following:

a. All window perimeter caulk shown on elevation 2/AE201. Window caulk in this area does not contain asbestos. Only caulk at top of wall contains asbestos.

b. The ten farthest left window perimeter caulk shown on elevation 1/AE202. Correct

c. All window perimeter caulk shown on elevation 1/AE205. Correct.

i. Refer to asbestos report by Briggs for further clarification of asbestos-contaminated items.

7. On drawing G002, note C tells you to remove approximately 12 courses from capstone to parapet flashing.

During the pre-bid walk through, it appears the capstone to the parapet flashing is about 19 courses high.

Also, the marking of note C on the various elevations are drawn approximately 19 courses high. How many courses high should the bidders include in our bids for note C?

a. Include 12 courses.

8. Dwg G002 Scope of Work summary para C states to remove brick courses at parapet, approx. 12 courses.

During our prebid we found that there are 20 courses and not 12. This will make a bid impact on our cost.

Please confirm that replacement is for 20 courses.

a. Include 12 courses in your bid.

9. Dwg C100 indicates proposed scaffolding area, but there is no actual pipe scaffold work shown. Work shown is new aluminum beams, insulation, ¾” plywood, etc. What is the intent/purpose of this work? Please clarify.

a. Work shown in drawing C1 and F1 on Sheet C100 shows requirements for building a protective surface over the existing sloped glass skylight system that is unable to support any additional weight.

10. Dwg C100 note no.1 states ‘proposed scaffolding staircase to be complete with railing which is not shown for clarity’. – Please clarify if contractor must construct this scaffolding staircase and what is the purpose/intent?

Please issue a drawing elevation & section of this staircase.

a. The intent of the scaffolding is to protect the existing glass skylight. Contractor is required to provide access to the work areas as necessary.

11. Please confirm overhang/suspended scaffolding is allowed from roof parapet.

a. NO, absolutely not.

12. Spec section 01 35 26 indicates various safety requirements. Please confirm that contractor’s site supervisor can simultaneously perform duties of SSHO ( para 1.7 )

a. If contractor’s site supervisor is the component person, properly trained and has an Osha 30 card he or she may perform the duties of SSHO

13. Spec section 01 00 00, page 2, para 1.5C states that GC shall provide unarmed guards at project after construction hours. Please advice if this is required.

a. N/A

14. Please advise how can contractor bring material and equipment in the courtyard area?

a. Through the loading dock, then through the access door near the smoking shelter. NO gas equipment shall be permitted to run in the building.

15. Can agency please inform what is the make and manufacturer of existing brick? as new bricks must match existing bricks.

a. Watsontown Landover Dark Iron spot type 7 and type 8 modular cored brick

16. Please advise is there is any phasing requirement in this project?

a. No there is no phasing requirement.

17. Please confirm that work hours are 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

a. Yes, this is correct

18. Is a temporary office trailer required for VA officials or for contractor?.

a. No, a temporary office trailer is not required.
