About this file
This is a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) document for Residential Water Services issued by the Town of Burlington, Massachusetts Department of Public Works, effective April 1, 2013. The SOP establishes technical standards and installation procedures for new water service lines, service line repairs, and water main connections. New water service installations require one-inch copper piping with direct burial from the water main connection point to the dwelling, except on designated main streets or streets under paving moratorium where pulling is permitted. The document specifies procedures for direct tap installations, including requirements for inspections, adaptor usage, and proper connection techniques. All new or replacement services must comply with material specifications, including prohibition of black iron or steel pipe connections and mandatory use of stainless steel components for repairs and abandonment work.
The SOP provides detailed guidance for handling damaged taps through direct tap corporation adaptors (Ford Meter Box Model C16-33) for minor damage or stainless steel service repair clamps for more severe damage. Iron saddles are explicitly prohibited for any repair work and must be replaced with stainless steel repair clamps featuring stainless steel bolts and nuts. All work requiring water main shutdowns must be coordinated with the Department of Public Works. The document includes a list of main streets eligible for service line pulling and specifies that stainless steel repair clamps must have a minimum length of one foot. Technical illustrations and part numbers are provided to ensure contractor compliance with established standards for materials, connection methods, and safety protocols.
