About this file
This Scope of Work document outlines a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) issued by the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook University for comprehensive design and standards development services related to campuswide external pedestrian and vehicular wayfinding. The University seeks experienced environmental graphic design, planning, and wayfinding consulting firms or multidisciplinary consultant teams to assess existing wayfinding conditions and develop a cohesive, scalable, ADA-conscious, and brand-aligned external wayfinding framework for both the Main Campus and Southampton Campus. The engagement encompasses existing conditions assessment, wayfinding planning and strategy development, environmental graphic design, signage standards development, technical specifications development, prototype visualization, preliminary sign location recommendations, implementation planning and budgeting guidance, and procurement support for future implementation phases. The project addresses current challenges including navigation difficulties for first-time visitors, aging signage infrastructure, limited consistency between pedestrian and vehicular systems, and the absence of cohesive campuswide design standards. Questions regarding the RFQ must be submitted through the sourcing system by 12:00 pm on July 1, 2026.
The University will evaluate submissions based on relevant project experience, qualifications of the proposed team, demonstrated design excellence, understanding of institutional wayfinding systems, quality of previous work, project methodology, ability to support phased implementation, references, and overall responsiveness to the RFQ. Interested firms must submit a Firm Overview, Project Team information with resumes, descriptions of at least three comparable projects completed within the last ten years, a narrative describing their Project Approach, Portfolio Materials demonstrating relevant work samples, and Fee Structure information. The RFQ does not constitute a commitment to award a contract or pay submission preparation costs, and the University reserves the right to reject any or all submissions, shortlist firms for interviews, and negotiate scope and implementation phasing following consultant selection. The selected consultant team will be required to comply with applicable SUNY procurement requirements and insurance provisions. Minority-owned, women-owned, and small business enterprises are encouraged to apply. Fabrication and installation services are not included in this procurement and may be procured separately by the University through a future Invitation for Bid or other procurement process.
