About this file
This is a structural design drawing document for the Department of Military Affairs at Camp Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois, detailing penthouse enhancement work for geothermal tank installation in the AGO building. The project scope involves adding two new water tanks to the existing penthouse structure, requiring a new exposed steel roof frame to vertically support the tanks above the existing penthouse. The design includes new structural elements such as W18x65 galvanized beams, HSS4x4x5/8 galvanized steel columns, W12x26 beams, and associated connection details and lateral bracing systems. The tanks are designed to support operating loads of 800 pounds each when empty and 2,125 pounds each when filled with 250 gallons. The drawings are sealed and expire on November 30, 2026, with a project number of 25065 and were issued for pricing on March 27, 2026. The design specifications include detailed framing plans, sections, and connection details across two sheets showing floor and roof framing arrangements, column installations, hanging platform assemblies, and lateral brace configurations.
The construction materials specified include ASTM A36 steel plates and angles, ASTM A992 wide flange shapes with 50 KSI yield strength, ASTM A500 Grade C steel tubing, ASTM A325 galvanized bolts, and AWS D1.1 welding standards, with galvanized finishes applied per ASTM A123/A153 specifications. The existing penthouse floor was originally designed for 100 PSF live load and 100 PSF dead load, and the roof for 30 PSF live load; the assessment indicates the floor is slightly overstressed with existing conditions and unsuitable for direct tank installation due to ceiling height constraints and fireproofing on steel members. The procurement is designated as a Small Business Set-Aside Program contract, limiting bidder eligibility to small business vendors. All steel members requiring field installation are specified for galvanized coating, and interior platform elements require primer and one final paint coat.

SCOPE OF WORK:
A CURRENT RENOVATION REQUIRES THE ADDITION OF TWO (2)
WATER TANKS TO BE INSTALLED INSIDE THE EXISTING PENTHOUSE.
REFERENCING AS BUILT DRAWINGS, CDB #546-325-021 DATED 01-06-1988
THE PENTHOUSE FLOOR DESIGN IS:
LIVE LOAD = 100 PSF
DEAD LOAD = 100 PSF
IN A CURSORY ASSESSMENT, THIS FLOOR UNDER ITS ORIGINAL/CURRENT
USING THE 4" TALL CONCRETE HOUSE KEEPING PADS, THE EXISTING FLOOR
FRAMING USE IS SLIGHTLY OVERSTRESSED. WE ASSUME THE STRUCTURAL
ENGINEER WAS UNAWARE OF THE HOUSE KEEPING PADS. ADDING THE
ADDITIONAL TANK LOADS TO THE FLOOR SYSTEM IS NOT RECOMMENDED.
ENHANCING THE EXISTING FLOOR STRUCTURE IS NOT FEASIBLE DUE TO
THE SLIM CEILING CORE HEIGHTS AND THE PRESENCE OF FIRE PROOFING
OVER ALL OF THE STEEL MEMBERS.
REFERENCING AS BUILT DRAWINGS, CDB #546-325-021 DATED 01-06-1988
THE PENTHOUSE ROOF DESIGN FOR:
LIVE LOAD = 30 PSF
DEAD LOAD = NOT LISTED
IN A CURSORY ASSESSMENT, THE ROOF FRAMING IS NOT CAPABLE OF
SUPPORTING THE HANGING TANKS WITHOUT ENHANCEMENT.
THE COLUMNS DO HAVE THE ADDITIONAL CAPACITY FOR THE HANGING
LOADS.
THE SCOPE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO PROVIDE A NEW EXPOSED STEEL ROOF
FRAME ABOVE THE EXISTING PENTHOUSE TO VERTICALLY SUPPORT THE
NEW WATER TANKS. THE HANGING SUPPORT WILL BE BRACED TO THE
PENTHOUSE FLOOR FOR SEISMIC RESTRAINT.
