RADON EXPLANATORY NOTES

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a radon action level of 4.0 picoCuries per liter (pCi/L). Occupied buildings with radon concentrations less than 4.0 pCi/L do not require radon mitigation; un-occupied buildings, or those buildings which are occupied only infrequently for brief periods of time, also do not require radon mitigation. Occupied buildings with radon concentrations greater than

4.0 pCi/L require radon mitigation and verification of radon reductions as soon as possible, with priority given to dormitories and student recreation buildings. Occupied buildings with radon concentrations greater than 20.0 pCi/L should be considered significant radon exposure hazards, and priority for mitigation should be given to buildings with these highly elevated radon concentrations.

Radon mitigation techniques include: (1) adjustment of the building HVAC system to create a positive pressure within the building; (2) sealing of foundation wall cracks, penetrations, or other openings;

(3) sealing crawlspace openings and sump pits; (4) installing an active subslab depressurization (ASD) system.

The campus is located on two adjacent sites separated by Brookside Avenue. One site consists of seven buildings (1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9) and the other site of four buildings (4, 20, 21 and 22). Primary underground electrical power service for the Wintergreen site enters at three locations from utility-owned primary power overhead distribution located along Wintergreen Avenue. These three entries feed two pad-mounted, step-down, utility-owned transformers with corresponding wall-mounted secondary utility meters located in Building 1 (in the main electrical room) and Building 7 (on the exterior wall) and one pole-mounted, utility-owned step-down transformer and corresponding meter serving Building 8. Building 1 also serves Buildings 2, 3, 5 and 9. The systems serving Buildings 1, 2, 3 and 7 are 120/208V, 3-phase, 4 wire, the system serving Building 8 is 120/240V, 1-phase, 3 wire.

New primary underground electrical power service for the Brookside site enters at three locations from utility-owned primary power overhead distribution located along Brookside Avenue. These three entries feed one pad-mounted, step-down, utility-owned transformer with corresponding wall-mounted secondary utility meter located in the Building 4 electrical room, and two pole-mounted, utility-owned, step-down transformers and corresponding meters serving Buildings 21 and 22. Building 4 serves Building 21. The systems serving Buildings 4 and 22 are 120/208V, 3-phase, 4 wire, the systems serving Buildings 20 & 21 are 120/208V, 1-phase, 3 wire. A 250 kW (312,5 kVA) generator (Onan, 250 ODFN, 3-phase, 120/208V, PF 0.8, 4747 hours), located near the SE Building 1 corner with a 1000A Onan automatic transfer switch (ATS), located in the main electrical room in Building 1, serves essential building loads in Building 1. Cogeneration once utilized in Building 1, was removed, with transformer and disconnect switch abandoned in place.

Comments: Underground service for this building is provided from a pad-mounted, utility-owned transformer located south of the building. The service entrance has a 2-section Siemens switchboard (MDP), which consists of a 2,000A main disconnect switch section and a 2,000A molded case circuit breaker (CB) distribution section. This building provides services to Buildings 2, 3, 5 and 9. The power meter for all these buildings is located in this electrical room. The MDP serves Buildings 2 & 3 ((2) 225A CB), ATS (600A CB), panels A, B, CA & D ((4) 150A CB), panel C (100A CB), panel M (400A CB), bakery (vacant-400A CB), elevator (100A CB), and exhaust fans (35A CB). There is a 250 kW (312.5 kVA) emergency generator (Onan, 250 ODFN, 3-ph., 120/208V, PF 0.8, 4747 hours), located near the SE Building 1 corner with a 1000A, 3-pole Onan automatic transfer switch (ATS), located in the Building 1 main electrical room, and 600A emergency panelboard (EMD). The EMD serves Building 9, panels BR, BRE, E & KE.

Comments: Recorded footcandle levels include natural light contribution. Most fluorescent light fixtures use T8-fluorescent lamps. Cove lighting supplements ambient lighting provided by HID in the dining area.

Comments: Most building areas do not have designated emergency lighting fixtures and the only source of emergency lighting is the lighting fixtures connected to the emergency panel backed up by the emergency generator. Selected compact fluorescent light fixtures utilized for corridor lighting and linear fluorescent light fixtures, in the serving area and in the medical/dental offices are served from the emergency panel backed up by emergency generator. Battery backup exit signs, emergency light fixtures and combination emergency light/exit signs are also provided (in the dining area).
